About 5 years ago I was night fishing with a buddy that used to tournament fish and since he knew the lake, I took the backseat of my boat , well  the white pole light was blinding me so he taught me to take a water/ coke bottle and cut the top in a way so it would ease over the light lens and you could put it so the label blocked the light from shining back in your eyes but still shine out towards the lake by peeling some of the label off but not all of it
I take it a step further and either paint one side of it flat black and or use black electrical tape on a small portion so you can retain your night vision while in the back of the boat.
Also can leave 1/2 or so of the tip where the lid screws on hanging down and you can tape that section to the pole so the bottle won't twist if the boat rocks or wind is blowing.

Depending on the thickness of your pole light , you could play around with the width of the bottle neck cut out and it could "snap" in place.

That's a sweet tip, I moved my rear light to the top of my motor and that helped alot.

My tournament partner has a nicer boat than mine,  so I generally take the back deck when we fish together.  That light is a nightmare to have to deal with.  He is a particular sort so there may be a fight when I slip a coke bottle over his light,  but he'll get over it.  This is a very useful tip,  but to take it a step farther,  What do you do about the bugs?
