Dobyns 684CB is my favourite Jerkbait Rod!

My vote as well.

The 704cb is awesome as well, but I get really wild and I kept hitting the rod on stuff. Switched to the 684 and have been good since. I also use the 684cb for poppers....awesome rod IMO. Landed a 5lber on the 684 this summer with it no problem.  Actually....I have a video up on that day on my YouTube.

Well maybe I'll get me a 684cb too :)

Hmmmmmmm...what a great thread!

I started out a couple of years ago using a Savvy 663c (actually now that rod is my 6 year old sons's favorite..it's his small spinnerbait/senko rod!).  After I got a 705cb from Ron for shallow cranks, I tried it as a jerkbait rod.  LOVED it!  But after reading this thread, I'll have to try out the 704cb this coming spring.  Maybe I'm over working it with the 705cb?

Again, great thread.

I would say yes, overworking with a 705.

704 or 684/685 will be much better.

If you check my video, you can see how that 684 does with a popper.Using 10lb Sunline mono in it.

Could the 704cb double as a crankbait rod, for small squarebills and lipless cranks?  I use the 705cb currently and it's stout enough to rip traps out of the grass with ease...yet soft enough to work a nice fish in.  Landed a fat 42" muskie with it.

The 704cb is great for small cranks. I think it covers cranks like a 1.5 size very well. The 705 can throw the smaller ones, I just think the 5 power can be a bit too much for the small ones.

I like the 684cb is great for small cranks as well.

Again, personal preference on the length.

I say yes

I am thinking about another crankbait rod. The one I am using is a custom built 7' MH very very good rod but not designed specifically for cranks. Tend to have lures pull out a lot. Thinking about changing my Sunline Super Sniper 12# FC to Sunline Reaction FC in 14# maybe will help? But I think rod might be the biggest help. I throw mostly lures in the 1/2 oz, a few 5/8 and 3/4 and have only one 3/8 oz, most all use mainly under 12' and likely in the 1 - 6' as often as not. Rare over the 15' mark. I really need this rod to be able to throw spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits and some topwaters too as I only use one casting rod with all others being spinning rods in the 7' plus MH to H range which I much prefer for everything I can get away with? Leaning toward the Dobyns 705CB (not glass) and probably no problems even with the 765CB as my favorite spinning rods are the 7'6" Hvy. power rods. Am I on the right track with the 705CB, any suggestions for me? All other rods except the one casting are Dobyns. Thanks

I use a 705cb glass as my shallow crank rod. Run 12-16lb Sunline Sniper. I rarely lose a fish on a crank. I think that combo works very well.

You almost need a multi purpose rod Bobsquatch. I think a 734 would be more what you are looking for. Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, buzzbaits are right in the wheelhouse for a 734. I've thrown some cranks on the 734 before just to play with it. 1/2-3/4oz is a perfect weight for that rod.
