As we are now into Spring and Summer is just around the corner, more folks will be back on the water. So it is s good time to remind anyone that may have forgot or let those that never knew this Trick.

As is often the case when fishing with plastics, especially worms, a Bass will inhale it so far and fast that we hook it in the top of it's throat or Gullet as we call it. Now what do you do?

Cut the line and let the hook rust out. This used to be the standard and in the older days of hooks without the coatings on them worked well. Now the hooks can last for quite a long time even under water 24/7 and I have heard of guys removing hooks from bass they had caught that were passing out of the bass's pooper.

Rip it out. This is ok if you plan to keep the fish but either way it usually causes the fish to Bleed and make quite a mess. Hooks removed this way will kill the fish after you place it in the water.

So instead try this quick and easy way of removing the hook that works every time.

Grasp the fish by it's lower jaw in one hand. This will cause the fish's mouth to open. First look inside and determine which way the "hook" part of the hook is pointing.

Now take a pair of Needlenose Plyers and gently reach up through the Gills on the Opposite Side that you have determined the hook point to be and grasp the top if the hook by the eye area. Slowly pull the hook eye back down through the gills.

What this does is Rotate the Hook so that now instead of the Hook Point pointing up and out of the fish's mouth causing it to catch, it is now pointed down and into the fish's throat.

It is not unusual to have the hook simply pop out at this point. If it does not then release the plyers from the hook and while still holding the fish by the jaw reach down inside and grasp the Rounded Part of the hook, which will be pointed up at you. Simply lift the hook from the fish's throat, it will pull right out.

Once you have tried and done this you will be amazed at how easy it is to do and just how well it works. If you try it and like it Pass it On to someone else!

Well I actually considered that as well. Then I thought of how many come here first and may not ever visit the Tips Board.

If it both helps some Anglers and Bass then where ever it should be is fine with me.

Pacific NW Ron

That is a great tip.  Thanks for sharing it.

Enjoying retirement in the great Pacific Northwest.  I've turned into a fair weather angler.  Why do it today when I can do it tomorrow?

I always like to push another tip on to this:

some folks can fit their hands in the fish's mouth.  Not me...big mitts, sausage fingers...so unless I get to practice this on 5 pounders or larger, just not going to work/fit.

Rather than a needlenosed pliers, I use a stainless steel, straight forceps.  small.  strong.  MUCH more easy to slip between the gill arches and much less likely to be problematic for the gill filaments.

also  because it's so much smaller, compact, much easier to see around, maneuver as needed.
