I have never made any plastics but sm planning on trying it. Dont want to put a ton of money into it right off the bat. What are some cheap alternatives on how to get started? Like how to melt the plastics without buying a big pressurized pot and all that. And how many baits, like for instance a fluke, can you get per ounce?

Use a hot plate or an old microwave.  You do not need anything fancy.

For molds you can make a plaster of paris mold.

Not sure on fluke/oz.

If doing in a microwave, how long and on high or low? What type of container should I use?

The only thing more depressing than not catching fish is not being able to go

that thread shows how to make your own ideas but you can use worms you aready have to make your molds. You may want to do it in the garage cus the smell can get a little srong and the wife wont be to happy.

Cheap micro will do fine. You will need to do it in the garage with the door open to help ventilate. You can get cheap open cavity molds from LureCraft if you want to dip your foot into the pool a little further then making a POP mold.

Hey bassin54...I use an old microwave and cut all my old plastics in very small pieces, put them in a small(8 oz. size) pyrex measuring cup. I fill it about half way and "zap" them at 40 to 30 sec. intervals, stirring after each interval. I've heard stirring with a metal rod creates less bubbles. Been a while since I've done it but want to say after 2 intervals it should be close to pouring if not .....do like 10 to 20 sec. intervals after that. I use plaster molds and i spray garlic scent in the cavity before my pours. Gives them a nice sheen, scenting them and making them pull right out of the mold very easily. I also use a soldering iron for cleaning up the edges of my baits after pouring because you WILL get some over pour. Good luck with your pours and if u have any other questions feel free to ask. Doug.
