Man do I hate hula grubs that have deformed skirts!

I decide to try to remedy that by attaching my own skirt strands that are thinner and have more
finesse action at rest and never stick together or become deformed. There are six in the photo and
I think I'll add another six if possible. How many does one really need to conform to the design idea?

The real question is how does it need to make the fish bite?  ~fff

Does anyone use Hula Grubs anymore?  I never caught a fish on one maybe because I compared
them to jig skirts which have a much greater flare and so I prefer jigs.

Camden

i still use them but only two main brands. my go to is a Chompers twin tail hula grub.
thread em on a stand up jig head and let the bait do the work.

I still use them just about every time I'm on the water.  I'll rig them on swim jigs w/out the skirts and fish them in and out of weeds or brush.  I use them for my trailers on jigs w/skirts.  If I need some color, I'll dip the skirt part of the grubs in dye.  Once threaded on the jig, the extra color will peek through the strands of the jig.  A black and blue flipping jig with a black/blue flake hula grub-tentacles dipped in chartreuse dye is one of my go to's in stained water.

So in effect your using them this way as a double tail grub.

I'm hoping my homemade modification adds a bit dead sticking otherwise I'll just use the
double tail as a trailer.

Sorry, I should have been more clear.  The swimjig w/out the silicone skirt.  I do use them as trailers w/out the plastic skirt when I don't want as much bulk

This is my set up as well.  Chompers - sometimes Yamamoto's,  black blue, on a stand up head.  I use a jig for slow presentations and the hula grub with more movement/ bottom swimming.

If the skirts are crap, bite them off and use them for a jig trailer.

Great call  on the Chompers Camden.  ~c~  I  still like them on a football head as well, over bottoms of sand, small rocks or mud.

one of my favorite baits. I use Chompers on football heads. no deformed skirts that I could see. at least not that the fish could see.

The only good Hula grubs I own are Chompers. The rest were on clearance.
To add a new skirt to a junk grub, I cut off the skirt from a tube and melted it onto the
grub's front. Now the skirt has flare and isn't warped or stuck together.

One of the things I really like about this style of bait is it's versatility. It is actually 3 baits in one.

1) You can fish it just the way it is.
2) You can cut the skirt off and use it as a twin tail grub as a jig trailer or whatever.
3) You can cut off the curly tail legs and fish it like a solid body tube (Yamamoto Ika.)

As a bonus you can take the skirts that you cut off and make your own color combos with other bodies - colors you can't get anywhere else  :-*
