Hello everyone. I am new to the site and noticed you guys have a lot of great info here. So here is my dilema. I have a 2004 Fisher Pro hawk 170. Its the same boat as a Tracker Pro Tournament V18 minus 6inches :) It currently is powered by a 2004 Merc 90hp elpto. I run a 3 blade steel prop 13x19. With just me in it the boat will run about 42 wide open on my GPS. With me my partner and our tourney gear it will go about 38-39 wide open. I really want to run in the mid 50's or higher if possible. I found a great deal on a merc 115 elpto and a merc 115 opti. Will either of those do the trick? and will all my current controls work? I fish alot of tournaments and I am tired of getting outrun to spots :)

I know get a bigger faster boat is the asnwer I usually get, but I can sell my motor and get either of the 2 mentioned above for about 1800 out of pocket, assuming I dont need anything else. That is much cheaper than a bigger boat :)

I doubt either of those will bump you up to the speed you are wanting...you are talking about adding 25hp so I would guess you will get maybe 5 mph at best.  Look at the projected top end gains on any new Nitro when you go between the 200, 225, and 250 and a little simple math will tell you not to expect much.  Also, keep in mind the weight difference between the two will subtract some of the hp gains of a bigger motor.  My boat's max hp is 175, I have a 150 and decided the 2k + for the 175 was simply not worth the 4 mph speed gain which I viewed as negligible at best.
