I'm having issues with keeping braid tight at the base of my spool on the alumina. It seems to spin on me no matter what knot I use or with tape after a while. I do plan on drilling. My question is that is there an axle at the center of the spool that would prevent me from doing that?

Thats not a good idea. The spool will be off balance and it may damage the spool. What you need to do is tie 5 yds of mono line on your spool. Tie that mono with a regular slip knot. Then to the end of the 5 yds of mono, tie your braid with a blood knot or one of several good knots listed as suitable for braid to mono knots. Once you do that and fill the spool, you will never see that knot, you won't feel the knot, you won't even know it's there, but your braid won't slip at all anymore.

You can also take a piece of rubber electric tape and wrap the spool after you have tied to it and then spool up.  This will also stop the slipping.  I have been doing that for 15 years and never had a slip.
