Are the bass in Oklahoma the northern strain or the Florida strain?

Mike Cork

There will be a mix. Northerns are the natural species but Floridas have been introduced on some lakes. Grand Lake for example at one time had an aggressive stocking program with Florida strain Bass.

it's always amazing what you can find on line with just a simple 'google' search...

Figured the OK fisheries folks might have put florida strain in there...but I can't find any document to validate.  Everything I can find suggests 'no'  .... as in only northern strain, spots and smallies.

and here's another very cool document on Grand Lake O the Cherokees

I'll have to dig for it again but when I was headed to Grand for the Nationals for ABA I did a lot of research and found somewhere about the Florida's in Grand at least. I'll try to find it this weekend.  :surrender:

I'm sure you are correct.  And sometimes, it just so happens, that the state boys 'drop shipment' that is outside the plans...(explains how a certain 150 acre lake I know got a couple muskies a year ago)...

the 'official' record doesn't show floridas going into Grand from 2006 to current.

doesn't mean the genetics are not still there and 'occasionally' cropping up.  there was a time when everyone was jumping on the florida strain train.  Over time, the studies started showing up that it wasn't just as simple as putting floridas in the population.  they really weren't adapted to the climate...and were simply not as able to survive...  fact, think there's a nice study done by the OK folks

Here is the news article. It talks about the aggressive Florida stocking and the fact that the northern lakes failed. So apparently the Grand Lake Florida's didn't make it.
