That is a sweet set up. I like it. Now if I can just find 2 old transom mount trollers noone wants  :-\

Their pretty easy to find if you belong to a club or fish many circuits. Make up a sign Wanted old transom mount trolling motors not working with good clamp bracketts. Someone will seek you out. Or you can check with any trolling motor repair shops or marine salvage yards.

I am going to take your advise and do some advertising. Hope I can round some up.

I found some on e-bay for $30 plus shipping.  I think I'll start with one.

If your patient you'll probably get the next one for free. The trimmer poles will take the longest to find. i got both of mine at auctions and I didn't have this particular application in mind at the time.  lo  Good luck.

Update avoid the twist lock type of poles. I've got half a pole stuck in the bottom of a local lake. I twisted left when I shouldn't have. The good thing is I know where it's at and the lake has dropped a foot since I stuck it, and should drop at least another foot if the rain keeps holding off.

What's probably the best length.  It'd  be nice to be able to store out of plain sight on the boat.  I was thinking 8 ft would be OK depending on where I fish the most.

The colapaseable poles store at roughly 6 to 6-1/2' and extend to about 12 feet. I usually use mine extended 8 to 10 feet. Remember if you reading 4 foot of water it's really closer to five or six feet to the surface. Collapsed I keep mine on the starboard side next to the side rail behind the shifter it just fits. Even broke down they won't fit in the rod box. Eight footers could be stored on the port side.

Good idea, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the info.  Now to find the stuff I need.

IF your not going to use collapsable poles I'd use eight footers.

Great ideas!
I had a kayak paddle with a broken blade - so my son sawed off the broken blade and extended the paddle with a wooden rod; now we have push-pole on one end and a paddle on the other. And it breaks down in three pieces for easy storage. Now, we just need to get a tip and a bracker to make it an anchoring device  :-* :-\

anyone using the manual anchoring systems. I found 4 or 5 that range from 140.00 to 280.00. not cheap but a lot less than a power pole. I don't anchor much and don't really want one bouncing around in the front locker. skinnywater system is the cheapest and has alum. poles but thicker diameter. others like Dig In and Wang have thinner fiberglass poles but are almost twice the cost. as much as I like power poles, 1500.00 to anchor once in a while is'nt going to happen.

As you can tell from the photos I posted I do use the anchoring system by skinnywater & love it.  Like you I find the price of a power pole to be ridicules for the amount of time I'd use it.  For me the front mounting system is the best option for a reasonable way to position or hold your position while fishing flats, docks or grass lines.

They are thicker and hold up very well with the rocking and deck bounce you will have with any wave action, where as the thinner fiberglass poles might be somewhat easier to sink in the bottom but will flex a good bit more than the skinnywater aluminum poles, you will also never get a fiberglass splinter stuck in your hand nor will you have to worry about them snapping off after some heavy wave action.

Now I wouldn't recommend storing them with your rods but I stow the two poles in my front locker along with my net and measuring board and have not had any issue with them bouncing around.  Also there are mounting brackets being sold as well to give folks other options as to finding the best storage location for each customer.

Good Luck in your hunt for an anchoring system.

thanks Ron. could you guess at the diameter of the poles? my boat has a space under the gunnels that I might be able to store the pole. they also have the two piece gig poles. my rod locker is 7 1/2' so the 8' poles won't fit. the two piece 10' might be better. what I meant was I don't want a traditional anchor in the locker. my boat has two storage lockers on the rear like the trackers. not large enough for an anchor.

Ok I hear what your saying about a traditional anchor  :)  My boat is in the shop so I don't have the poles here to check, however I do have an extra mount that I took a look at and would say the poles have a diameter of an inch and a half to an inch and a quarter.  The poles are ribbed so they are not slippery when wet and they are foam filled on each end as well as capped so they float should you drop one over the side.

If your boat lists the rod lockers as 7.5 ft I would bet the 8ft pole will fit as there is normally some room to play with up under the front deck but I don't know anything about your boat so it's just a guess.

Your right they make gig poles and other things as well, give Andy or Lilly a call to see what your best options and price would be, sounds like the two piece might work better for you and will also let you hold position in a little bit deeper water.  :-*

Where did you pick up those clamp on brackets with the slot on them for the pole
