I'm fairly new to bass fishing (couple years) and went to Kinkaid lake in Illinois today.  This grass was everywhere.  Any idea what kind it is?  Cell phone camera so sorry for the quality.

The photo is kinda hard to see but it looks like hydrilla to me. We've got tons of it in Caddo Lake.

Respectfully,

Yep that's hydrilla, wait till it gets on the surface and mats over and you'll be in for some of the funnest fishing you've had :-*

Ok so braid, big jigs, and heavy rods right?  My 1/2 oz jigs just sat on top of it and looked back at me confused haha.

3/4 should get through what you have pictured there depending on how much skirt is on it. May have to go up to 1 ounce!

Once you punch through be sure to hold on tight while working it. I like PowerPro 65# braid.

Like they said it's not a very good picture. 99% of the submerged grass in Kinkaid lake is coontail. there is some pond weed, american lotus, and cattail are the emergent weeds.
If you ever get to Coffene Lake you'll find it has a lot of coontail in it also. Egypt has a lot of coontail and some water millifoil too. Coontail is the most predominat grass in most Illinois lakes with some having Water Millifoil.
You can still attack it the same as you would hydrilla. Hope that helps ya.

I may have jumped the gun on this? Looking at it with out zooming in it does have a coontail apperance. Just hard to tell in that photo.

Yeah all I had was a phone to take the picture.  It resembles a Christmas tree if that helps at all.  Just hope my H veritas can handle it bc I don't have a clue what to get if it doesn't.

Buzzkid if you had put that description of it looks like a christmas tree I bet Mike would have gotten it wright. IT's often hard to tell what things are with a phone camera. But I'll help ya with any future pic's ya want to take pull some out of the water and shoot the picture with it in you hand. It will be much easier for someone to give you a more accurate answear that way. Learning types of grass is an important part of fishing and getting the wright answears so you know what your looking at and have it ID properly is important.
I had a fishing partner that called everything Millifoil took me a long time to get him to understand the differance. Yep he was a hard headed German.  lo  But again I'm a hard headed Hungarian.  lo

Yeah that would've been a better idea.  We're going back Monday with some heavier tackle to get in that grass so ill try to remember that.

Hippy grass haha otherwise known as the devils lettuce.

Here's a better picture of the grass.
