I have many reasons why I don't fish lead weights anymore! Sensitivity being the biggest!

I wrote a short article about the many different reasons. Check out the front page

Well you know me I'm not a big believer in the more expensive things the better but I will say this I have been using tungsten for about two years now and I will not go back to lead. It is the one thing in my fishing that I will spend extra on.  ;D

The only problem I have ever had with tungsten is it will occassionally break glass beads on a carolina rig.  I had this happen only once, but it was enough to scare me when I saw half a bead with jagged edges right next to my line.

Throw it in the thick stuff

Thanks everyone.

Hoop, they make a special bead to use with Tungsten. I've not used it personally but you are correct in that they will break glass beads if the bead had an issue or the Tungsten bangs off it to hard.

that does happen.  but if you pay attention...and recognize that even braided line needs to be checked and retied occasionally...you'll be just fine.

Nicely written Mike!  I'm also one of those guys who just won't go back to lead for my weights...and I'd love it if my jigs were tungsten as well...but not sure that many $$$ I am willing to part with...

Mike Cork

The few tungsten jigs that have hit the market haven't faired well, in sales. They are even more pricey and many anglers are even more concerned with losing a jig versus something a bullet weight would be used for.

I'm like jared and CF, I won't spend $15.00 $20.00 for a crankbait or $3.00- $4.00 dollars for a hook but I am happy to spend it on them tungsten weights.
I don't mind not knowing all the answers, but I keep forgeting the danged questions.

I went back to lead for casting T-rigs, still flip with tungsten because of the size of the weights compared to lead. I use a lot of braid so I've found that the sensitivity is great even with lead. If I have to break off with lead I'm not gonna sweat a .20 cent weight but a few $2.00 tungstens in a day adds up and not worth it to me. After switching back to lead and using braid I have not been let down.

I still use lead, however, I have football shaped weighted that the line passes through side ways a local guy makes for me. I fish lots of rocky areas so the football shape in 1/4 and 3/8 ounce sizes means less time hung up. The football shape is much more sensitive than a bullet shaped lead sinker also. I peg the weight in place and fish with craws and drag them across rocky bottoms and can usually catch a couple that way all times of the year. I use hand poured plastics so the bait tends to float up and stand up alot as well. It gives me a cross between a shakey head and t-rig in one bait.
