When you are fishing for crappie in colder water such as late fall or winter, you need to downsize your line. The reason you need to downsize your line is because crappie have special receptors in the back of their eyes that improve their vision in colder water temperatures. Now this being said, if the water clarity is very stained or muddy due to recent rains you can get by with a larger pound test line. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, in the spring when crappie are getting more aggressive due to the water temperature increasing and the spawn is coming up they seem to pay less attention to line size. When I'm below our local lock and dam fishing during the pre-spawn and spawning crappie season I use 20lb. test Spectra Power Pro braid with a 20lb. mono leader. The crappie pay no attention to the dark green line what so ever. In the late fall and winter though, I use 6lb., 8lb. or 10 lb. mono due to the colder water temperatures because crappie can indeed see better in colder water temperatures.

I had never heard about this. Thanks for sharing. Just might be able to put a few more in the freezer this winter  :-*
