I have an 89 Champion boat, I have recovered the seats and had new carpet installed.  I am thinking of replacing the 91 120hp Evinrude that has been giving me some problems.

I am thinking of putting a brand new 115hp 4 stroke motor on the back.  I am just putting too much money into such an old boat?

Unfortunately, the new motor may cost more than the worth of the boat.  But with that said, If the boat is in good shape, gelcoat is good, you don't have weak spots or many spider cracks, and you really LIKE the boat, it would be worth it.

First I would look at the price of the motor, compare that to upgrading your hole system with a newer model used boat and see what you think is best.  There are literally tons of boats for sale out there, especially during this down turn in the economy.  Look around, see what would be best for you and look at your boat as a 3rd party, what can you find wrong with it?

Hope this helps

Thanks Lee.

I am getting the little things that are bothering me about my motor looked at in the next week or so, if I can get the motor sorted out then I think the current set up will last me for many years to go.

The boat itself is in great shape and I recovered the seats and recarpeted so I would like to hold on to the boat for a while, if for now other reason than it would be difficult to recoup my costs from those upgrades.  I guess that is what made me think of a new motor...

I'm right along the lines of Lee. Resale wise you'll have trouble recouping the cost. However that may not be an issue for you. If your very happy with your boat other than the motor then go for it.

But to make sure look at the dollars you'd spend and then look at some boats in that price range. If nothing jumps at you and makes you say I want that one day then you're pretty safe with a re power. But if something gets you to thinking you might want something different, then down the road sometime you're probably going to be looking for a complete upgrade and the re power will cost you.
