Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence river were a bit rough this cloudy Sunday morning so my partner and I decided to head to one of the smaller rivers that has held bass in the past.  The main drawback to fishing some of these smaller rivers here in NY is there is a 5 MPH No Wake Zone the entire length.  We decided to try it anyway.

We started fishing at the first main weed bed near the mouth of the river.  My partner caught a small largemouth right off the bat on a fluke.  I worked a buzz frog and did not get a single bit on it all day.  Switched to a floating frog and caught several fish, but the activity level was way down compared to the bite my partner was having on tubes fished in the thickest weed clumps he could cast to.  I switched over to an beaver and started catching fish on the inside weed edges along the rocky shore.  All in all a good day my partner caught the most and the biggest (around 3 1/2 lbs) using a fluke, tube, and jig and pig.  I caught several decent fish on the beaver as well as a couple nice bass on the floating frog.

For as cloudy and overcast a day it was strange to find the bass buried deep the the thickest weeds.  The rain was light and spotty so we did not get soaked.  We figured we covered several miles of the river fishing wood, rock, and weeds.  The weeds clumps held the most and the biggest fish.  The ride back to the ramp took about 55 minutes idling with the big engine all the way.

5mph zone wow, well at least you don't have to deal with water skiers and jet skiers ~c~  Thanks for the report Baron.

Cashing a check is not a bad thing and even more satisfying when the fishing is tough Yar.
