But I'll be danged I can't get them to grow down here  lo

Grew up fishing for them slobs, great eats and finicky at times but man some great childhood memories sitting on the back with a big fire the night before opener.  Staying up late so you could make you 1st cast at 00:01  ~gf

Head up North on the Red or the Sulphur Rivers, catch a few of those 100# Gar, just as ugly, fight hard and some say taste good  ;D

Just put your hands in the Ice chest every now and then, then close your eyes and dream  lo  :-*

great childhood memories aside...and with full respect Ron, walleye just get way too much 'positive press' from the folks up North...

just about any fish taken from cold clean waters tastes great...plus, factor in that temperatures aren't 100°F and the fish doesn't deteriorate nearly as quickly once it's 'out of the water'...

Always thought that if a guy were to catch his fish, keep them in the livewell in cool water (like we do bass) or even bleed them immediately and toss them on ice...that the meat flavor/quality of those 'average' fish like bluegill, catfish, etc would be vastly improved as well...

and on to a slightly different note:  there are more than a few folks out there that feel smallmouth taste better than walleyes... :shocking:

as for gar...I've heard some really good things about how they taste...IF prepared properly....and the fish is held properly between the catch and the cleaning/cooking...which regardless of your fish species...is of ultimate importance.

now, if all you're gonna do is dredge them in beer batter and fry them up in hot grease...well then, don't know it matters much.

;)

beyond that, there's a reason walleye guys use fairy tackle to catch these fish:  sure, you get 'more bites'...but they don't 'test the tackle' like the Broad Street Bully LMB...or SMB...or spots...or catfish...or carp...

There is a few local creeks that have a decent population of southern pike. Unfortunately the bigger ones are the only ones with a decent amount of meat on them, otherwise they stay slim down here.
