Should i ue anything in the holes to prevent cracking when the mount is tightend down to the boat? I've seen some boats have little cracks that run out from under cleats and such.

Drill a pilot hole first.  This will keep the stress cracks at bay. Also when you put in the screws dab some epoxy on the ends of them. This will keep them from backing out.

If you can run your drill in reverse that is the best way to get thru the gel coat. This rigging Video at about 2:00 Minutes is right where I so this technique. It prevent Chipping or crackign the Gel Coat. Also always thru bolt and use loctite or Ny-Lock Lock Nuts to make sure the bolts stay tight.
