Im working in eastern Maryland, about 10 miles from DC.  Just wondering if anyone knows of any good Bait and Tackle shops in this area.  Been to BPS several times, and am hoping to find some local places that may have some different stuff.  Thanks, Jim

Not sure man.  I'm still fairly new to the area.  I do know that many local places have gone out of business thanks to BPS, Walmart, and the strict bait laws in this state.  Where are you actually fishing at?
Yes, that is a gator in my profile picture, but I was trying to catch a bass, so it counts!
One 3ft long, 10 pound "Largemouth" for me.

Not fishing, just buying tackle lol.  I figure Ill get to fish eventually.  Jim

There are shops here, most are more geared towards the bay angler. What town are you working in?

How long are you in town?

OK, that's not what most of us consider eastern MD, but here's some places to check out. As I said, most are geared more towards the bay angler & Striped bass, but sometimes you can find some good deals on bass tackle in these smaller shops. I can't guarantee these places will have a lot of bass tackle. The first five are your best bet to check.

Clydes in Lansdowne. Near Baltimore
Anglers, off US RT 50, Annapolis. ( Near the Bay Bridge)
TG Tochermanns in Baltimore, Eastern Ave. ( been there forever!)
Marty's in Edgewater, south of Annapolis.
AllTackle in Annapolis

Tylers Tackle in Chesapeake Beach ( Primarily salt, they make a lot of their own)
The Tackle Box in Lexington Park
Fishbones Bait & Tackle, Pasadena ( makes a lot of his own)

Eastern Shore
Shore Sportsman in Easton

I went to Tochermanns, and they are a decent shop. A large selection.  Are any of the others you mentioned that big or bigger?  Jim

Anglers is about the same size as Tochermann's. Alltackle may be a bit larger. They moved into a bigger location since I was in there last, but it looks bigger. They have more selection in general, and actually have 2 stores, but the other one is in Ocean City, and geared towards the saltwater there. Alltackle is primarily geared towards the offshore, big game crowd, and the bay, but is slowly adding more freshwater. You can see some of what they have on their website.

Clydes is not as big, but is another shop that's been there a long time. Real nice folks to deal with too.

Marty's is small, again mostly tackle for the bay, and another that is trying to have as much as possible for freshwater. Also nice folks to deal with.

I've found that the thing to do with these shops is not be in a hurry and really look around. Since some have been around a long time, they may have bass stuff tucked away in a corner that really no one notices. There was a small shop near me for several years, but the guy closed after his rent went up. Just could not afford to stay in business. He made a lot of bay type lures. When I was making tackle to sell, I bought jig hooks from him a few times. Real nice guy too! Anyway, he had some bass assassin type lures in his shop and some other plastics, looked like someone local might have poured & they were great baits & reasonably priced. Local shops sometimes have local tackle you won't find in the big chains.

I used to to supply Anglers with most of the flies they sold back when I was in business, and sold some to Clydes.

There used to be a hardware store near where I grew up that sold tackle. My dad bought stuff in there when I was a kid. After I got old enough, I started looking around in there and found stuff that wasn't even made any more. The old guy who owned it died & another fellow bought it & turned it into a beer & wine shop. I ended up buying all the tackle he had left. I got things like old original made in USA Arbogast Hawaiian Wigglers & Original Tony Accetta spoons made before Luhr Jensen bought them. I wish I knew better back then as I've used the lures. They would have been collectors items now I would expect.  ::)

I'd love to Creel, but I didnt bring any tackle with me this trip.  I was carrying a bunch of stuff, but my van was pretty crowded, and I hadnt used it in a while, so I left it at the house.  Jim

You use left or right hand retrieve?

Dang, I only have left hand.  Will take you out if you can use left hand.

bassindude

I'm headed home on the 3rd.  Pretty sure I'm comming back.  I'll bring some tackle with me.  Would love to hit the Patomic with you.  After watching the BASS tournament I couldn't believe the fish in there.  Never knew.  Jim

Great, bring some tackle back and we'll get out.  Since it is August, mostly be frog and punching.  I like to fish the heavy grass, since you are from Florida you should be used to that...

bassindude

Oh ya. Can't wait.  I have some new punching toys I've been dying to try.
