I have read many articles on what is the minimum or recommend things you should carry in a boat with you. Are there any guide lines to this?

What do all you fellow Ultimate Bass members carry?

Warpath

I carry a horn and whistle, throwable PFD, flares, a distress flag, an oar, PFD's for myself and a co-angler (if I'm going out on the lake with someone I take an extra just in case he forgets his), and I think GPS and cell phones are important to carry now as well.  Even a cheap GPS fishfinder will give you your exact location and if you can convey that to emergency services, you'll be ahead of the game.

Pferox

I carry what Warpath does, and since my boat can carry 4 I have 4 PFDs available.
And I carry two fire extinquishers.
I also have Ship to Shore radio, and as soon as the ol Flair is back in service an automatic transponder is next. Even when fishin inshore, its a good idea to have any way possible to send tracking information and communication to the Coast Guard. The Gulf is a BIG place.
