Good Morning,
My wife and i did Christmas early and she got me an air brush. It is a Paasche VL 202

and a set of Creatix paints...

I have done a little research and i know you can use this brush with the canned air or an air compressor. She gave me a coupon for an air compressor of my choosing....but i dont have a clue. she was thinkig one of the big 30 gal tanks (which is what i want for other things) but i think that's a bit overkill for this. The working preassure for the brush is 22-50 PSI with 75 the max. I guess ill list my questions so it would be easier to answer

1) what size compressor do you reccomend?
2) the paints are water based is that ok?
3) What type of clear?
4) best type of thinning agent?

I have to go on a 5 hr round trip to get my boat so i dont have as much time to search before posting. im hoping to have answers when i get back so we can go buy the compressor and i can practice. I'm off for the next week and is prime time to learn. If you can think of anything else i should buy to get myself started please let me know. Thank you ~Jesse

P.S. Thanks Nick for helping my wife with the choice.

Not overkill at all. With an airbrush, most use a seperate pressure regulator with filter and moisture trap. An air compresser can be used for so many things other than painting that a larger unit just makes more sense if you have the room for it. I would be cautious about noise however most of the pancake (oiless) compressers are very noisy if that is a factor.

A lot depends on where your compressor will be located. If you're planning on using one right next to you, look for something quiet, like this SilentAire Sil Air 20-A from Bear Air. It's no louder than a compact refrigerator and is perfect for a single airbrush. If you can locate it away from your work area, a larger standard compressor should work fine. Use a good filter-regulator if you get a standard compressor -- oil in the air and pressure variations can cause a lot of grief.

If your budget is a little less, search Google shopping for airbrush compressor.

i believe i have a 300-400 budget. the compressor will be in the garage with me, so i guess quieter would be better

no prob Jesse....go to lowes and get the in line dessicant for your line from your compressor to your brush, i have a 15 gal compressor, it works great and i can still fill up a tire or anything of the sort.  if you get a small one, it will run constantly.

Water Based paints are alright.  it just takes water to clean the gun and to thin the paint and you dont have the laquer fumes smelling up the garage.  i use laquer based paints.  laquer dries instantly.  it makes the painting process quicker and is ideal for the baits I paint.  as for clearcoat, i use Devcon 2T Epoxy, its hard to find without ordering it.  i'll show ya what i got going.....

i'll probablly go to Seminole in the morning to practice for the ABA Tournament on Sunday....

dude, fine tuning that brush will take some time.  keep your pressure at about 18-22.....if you want splatter, drop it down to 13 or 10....get some cardboard to practice on

i have it set at 20. i'm using the boxes from her washer and dryer lol.
