When using the down scan, is the cone angle and size about the same as standard sonar?

No Down Imaging and Traditional 2D Sonar Beams are Different. Down Imaging is very Narrow Razor Thin Beam Front to Rear but Side-to-Side is boxed shape so everything from equal distance to the sides from the Water Surface to the Bottom is covered. With Humminbird you have 3 selectable widths Narrow, Medium or Wide. Where as Traditional 2D sonar is cone shaped in all directions the farther it travels the wider it covers. For Example 20° covers approximately 1/3 of depth so at 3' Depth you cover 1' of area, 9' you cover 3' of area, 30' depth 10' area and growing as you go deeper. So when using all three sonars in combination you will get different returns. Look at this image and you can see the benefits of the very narrow beam of Down Imaging and Side Imaging show the details in these narrow ditches. Traditional 2D sonar could not recognize the ditches because of the wider beam and hit the tops on both sides and displayed it as flat because that is what it sensed with the wider coverage at this depth.

I'm sold just on that pic of dude swimming how much does this unit cost?

DougV

Ok are you ready for the answer?

This was Pontoon Boat idling next to me. The farthest line is the motor and the really bright white line is the prop returning a very strong return as it rotated until it passed me (No wake zone). THe left side is the left pontoon turbulence trail. THe right side cannot be seen because the left pontoon blocked the ability for the sound wave to travel that far.

Hey it was a tough one I admit but I also thought it was really neat how well the Humminbird SI captured the left pontoon and motor and proves that SI covers to the surface of the water out to the sides. I was scanning 100' so this boat was approximately 50' to the side of me.

How are you able to get the information t top and bottom of the screen verses the left side? Is my 997 capable of rearranging the screen info?

Thanks,
Joe

1197c has the Readouts at the Bottom. 898c, 997c, 998c is on the sides.

That makes sense now that you explained it. I can see it, but just looking at the view how can you tell those images were at the surface? You know because you took them.

Dug are you the same guy that did the Seminar at Nameoki marine last fall? IF you are, are you comming back this year? I thought that was one of the best in the series of seminars last year.

   Hope your comming this year.

The easiest way to know they are at the surface was because I seen it with my own eyes. But the other thing is seeing the details patterns of the bottom through the turbulence from the pontoon and prop wash.

I was not the one at Nameoki that was David Port OEM Sales Rep for Humminbird he has asked me to come do that seminar a couple times but the schedule didn't work out. I do several in the Kansas City Area and not sure 2010/11 Seminar Schedule Season yet but that might be a good area to request.

Did you catch the Humminbird Marketing Manager? I've heard a dropshot with an iPod attached usually gets 'em, but sometimes you have to hop it a little. lo

DougV

I tried drop shot with $10 Bill not luck then $20, $50 and nothing when I started dropshot $100's all they would do is steal my bait. I ran out of bait real quickly...Do you have any more baits I can borrow and I'll see if I can catch him....
