Tips for Hollow Swimbaits

When using the hollowed bodied swimbaits (like the Shadalicious) I learned it really helped my hook-up ratio if I split the belly of the bait to create a cavity for the hook. Otherwise, a fish has to collapse the entire bulk of the bait to get to the hook point. The slot allows the hook to push through the bait with ease. I split it from about and inch from the head to an inch below the hook. It will not effect the action and it really improves the sticking power.

In addition, I keep a variety of the clip on weights, those elongated "catfish" weights with the rubber center. I remove the rubber and clip them onto the bottom of the hook. This gives me the flexibility to increase the weight of a pre-weighted hook, or in emergencies turn a non-weighted hook into a swimbait hook.

If you are new to swimbaits, I encourage you to commit half a day to throwing one. Clear water and patience will pay off.

You may want to look into something like the Yum Money Minnow, it looks almost exactly the same but it has the belly pre-split so you don't have to worry about cutting it to modify it in any way, and worry about an uneven cut that can change the action of it, I have had good luck with the Yum version. I also bought a pack of these which did not have the precut slit so I did it myself and turned out pretty good. I also got some long shank jig heads for them as well so it looks like a baby bass that has another fish head sticking out its mouth. Planning to use them this weekend.

Yea, I have tried the Yum version. I just have more confidence in others. And, as all fishermen know, confidence is better than reality. Ha.

I will take another look at the Yum based on your recommendation. I am all about getting better.

I am with you on this one, I love to use Yum plastics but IMO their swimbaits are overpriced and you can find better quality for less $$$. (Disclaimer) This is coming from someone that does not use them very much though, so take my opinion for what its worth. I like the Mann's brand because they are pretty cheap and last for a long time. I also received some Lake Fork swimbaits from a UB contest and I really like them as well, good action and they are durable if you can keep the tails away from toothy critters.
