I am buying a 2004 TR20X w 225 merc, with 80 hours approx, tandem , DC, for 16600.  I also have the option of buying a 2005 TR196 with 35 hours on and eTech for 17500. I had no idea I was going to get the 196 offer in at the last minute and am scheduled to drive to NC, test the TR 20X out on a lake, then buy it. Which would you choose? I love the 20 but the 196 is looking newer, not by much. Thanks

The X hulls in my opinion are one of the best Triton ever made. That and I'm a Merc man so you can guess which route I would suggest,

Thanks Joe. Had no Idea that was the designation reason, the X hull is designed different than the 196.

I'll go with the 20X. Bigger boat, bigger deck space, better ride, not to mention the X hull is a little better then the TR.

You will also get better market value for the 20X.

I used to have TR21 and it was a nice fast boat but now I have the TR21X and its much better.
In my opinion the Mercury is a better engine anyways and you would love that big 225 on a 20' boat.

Where in NC, which lake?

Jdaddy

By the way, how well do yo know the seller? The price is well under true value and sounds too cheap.
I hope you take it to a dealer or certified Mercury dealer for a compression check at least.
Some boats looks great but have/had lots of problems. 80 hours engine is cool but I had one blown at 90 hours.

I love my TR186, but I also think the X hull is a better choice.  When I saw the prices you mentioned, the first thing that came to my mind was that it was too cheap.  Be sure and do what jdaddy said just to cover thy arse.  Good luck!

The Triton guy in NC screwed me. He knew for 2 weeks we were coming down (9 hour drive) and the boat showed as a POS!
Looked great in the SELECTED photos he sent. Quote " No chips in the gel coat, no scratches, no rips or tears, mint condition, this boat is flawless" this was BS. The boat had a huge chunk out near the bow, the batteries were completely dead, the charger did not work due to WATER in the well, every screw was rusted, the back seat was broke, decals coming off all sides of motor, seams on 2 seats coming apart, trolling motor was still apart for some reason, cracked dash, etc etc etc. I was ready to hammer this guy. We left, he then calls and says he will fix all and for 1500 less. Needless to say I bought a 2006 Stratos 294ProXL yesterday for 16800 in damn near showroom condition from a guy on NYbass. thanks guys. Guess the NC idiot was just trying to unload it as quickly as possible. Buyer beware in that case.

Go for the 20 because eventually you will be wanting a bigger boat and besides I am not a ETEC fan
