a good portion of my success with crankbaits has come right in the shallows. after working the area ive casted out to, ill pull the crank in slowly at the surface and when its 2 or 3 feet from the shore ill stop and let it sit for 15, 20 seconds preferably next to a branch or some brush, etc. then ill give it that one final 2 inch dip and on the way up.. BOOM

I've never stopped just before lifting from the water - I will however throw the CB out, let it hit the water and sit for a bit before starting retrieve.  Thanks for the tip - will give that one a try.

I do the sameting with a pop R top water. pop it up to a tree ,or any kind of wood, then stop it,sometimes even 10 seconds or so,then the bass will suprise you,and come up and suck it in why it is paused.caught mant bass also stopping my retreive with a spinner basit as well as a crank.
