September 27, 2005 Which Bait to Throw and Why

Opps..wasn't logged in on first post either....here goes again..

One of the favorite foods for bass are crawfish, so earlier in the year I throw alot of crawfish colored baits....especially the #46 natural crawfish colored Rattletrap in 1/4oz....

Crawfish are very plentiful at this time with a new "hatch", etc.

Later in the year I fish the same bait in chrome/blueback as the bass are more after the big schools of shad....

It has been my experience that this is especially true for Caddo Lake.

If you really like bream fishing..and are looking for a good "bed" and are having trouble finding one...don't forget to keep that old "sniffer" going...

I know it does sound a little crazy, but when you do get a whif of a strong fishy odor, chances are a bream bed is near by..

Scottie you are so right on with that last one you can smell them a long way off

While bass fishing ...especially with spinner baits...sometimes too much flash can shy the bass away from your lure instead of enticing it to strike....

I do experiment, but one rule I use is to use a spinner with silver blades early, late,  and on overcast days, and use the same spinner with gold blades on brite, sunshiny days..

When I'm fishing for kitty-kats in a Big lake I look for them marker boyes put there to mark the channle and find the one closssest to the deep channle and you will find the Big Kitty-kats down there because the Army Core of Engeneras have put big blocks of concrete down there and made a kitty-kat motel

One more and eye'm done  another thing eye look for along the shore is where the same core of engenears have put big blocks of concrete along the shore and over time they drift ap[art somewhat and make like little caves under neath them well fish with a bobber and a live Bluegill and drift it right past and agenst the block and you just might find a BIG Flathead in there.

Since I'm still getting back into fishing and fish primarily from shore, I like to use a small 1/4oz jig to start if I'm fishing a new hole.  I try to count down the jig to get a feel for the depth based on where my cast was from shore.  I then retrieve the line in by walking it with my fingers to get a little better feel for the bottom contour and cover.  I do this a few times from the area and then try to get my larger lure or jig in the area where I think the fish should be holding.  A couple of times I've had to quickly let go and set the hook because a bass or bluegill has grabbed the small jig.

  I went i saw I conquered. In the evening hours after the sun goes down and the weather settles on a clear sky I will use dark top water baits, such as my halographic Locust (Hocus Locust) or a large popper such as Yu-Zuri, I have even tried Large Chub Creek Salt Water poppers. Tonight I did just that when I left earlier. I caught 3 fish in a little over 1 1/2 hrs. NO Monsters, but good fish. I use the darker ones to create a siloquete against the evening sky. On cloudy evenings I lighten the colors just a little, but use louder sounding baits, or one with 1-2 props to disturb the water and get those fishe's attention

  Now hear this ------------Pay attention out there, there are so many signals being transmitted to us on the water.Egrets feeding, squirrels playing, turkey's frolicking, bait fish jumping, slow water, fast water, shallow/deep water, tidal waters, ponds, lakes, and it goes on and on..............I have read alot of the posts and I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who has posted because YOU have Taught Me alot tonight and Retaught me things I took for granted and completely overlook, that's why I say Pay Attention, and my last post is on worms/senko's.They are the fishermans/womens best friend, if for nothing else they make you slow down and pay attention....It is so easy to get caught up in what everyone else is using/throwing/baiting with that we forget OUR Strengths and play their game, not ours and take us away from the fish we want to catch..............Tonight I think I've seen/read the next BassMasters, In-Fisherman, North American Fishing Club, Bass Times, and Field & Stream editions for the next three months-Again I Thank You
