Suggestions for VA bass (Lynchburg to Williamsburg)

Hi guys and gals,
I hope this isn't in the wrong section. I'm heading down to Virginia next week for a couple days before traveling to the outer banks of NC. My girlfriend wants to stop in Lynchburg for at least a day to shop--which gives me time to do some exploring. Any suggestions for boatless fishing? I hear good things about Briery lake and Sandy river, but they're a little out of the way. Are there any spots closer to Lynchburg for a jersey guy to find some southern bass?
