Channel

Loose term used to describe any deeper area of water.  Usually reserved for small or large "strips" of deep water.  This may be a natural channel of a river or it may be a strip of deep water in a lake.  Many lakes formed by the damming of a river will have deeper areas where the river ran prior to the dam.  This is the channel of the lake.  Any strip of deep water found in a naturally formed lake will also be commonly called a channel.
