Ok so I have to say something that really gets me going...
I have been looking through a lot of photos on the internet of big fish being caught and someone taking a photo to post on the internet and guess what I see? I see a giant bass for the particular area of the country laying on the carpet of a boat and it makes me so sick it is not even funny!
I love bass and am an avid fish care enthusiast so it really really gets to me. So here is my small tip. If you absolutely must put the fish on the deck, which I would not do, put it in your livewell with Please Release Me formula for 20-30 minutes to replace the lost slime coat, along with a bunch of other things that stuff will do to help your fish recover. The fish may not appear to be in any worse shape after you lay them on the carpet but the slime coat of a bass protects them from disease in the water and if you remove it you can unknowingly harm those big bass, which are needed for reproducing genetics in a lake much like the Texas Share Lunker concept.
Please really take care of all fish but those big ones handle with care!

I always try to avoid put a bass onto my boat carpet.

I agree with Mike... good reminder! :-*

I also like to dip my measuring stick into the water before I lay the fish on it for measuring. I heard about doing it from some source in the past and have continued to do it since.

Also guys, you can add a little salt to your livewell. This will help protect the fish of any bacteria or fungus that is due to catch stress and livewell stress. Probably a cup or 2 should do it.

I have been knowned to tell my parters not to allow the fish splat on the water, not to allow the fish to be let on the carpet, not allowed the fish be kept in the sunshine( it makes a fish get sunburn), and most importantly to treat the fish with care.
