I'm about to ship a combo. What is the safest way to ship this thing? Definitely don't want the guy to get a broken rod!!!!!!!!    Thanks to all in advance for advice!

If you know anyone that has received a rod, ask them for the tube the rod came in.  I'm about to ship a rod to my grandson and have one of those rod tubes.  They are very thick cardboard...the rod will be safe in there.

two ideas for you, one run down to the local hardware or home depot type store and look in the hardwear area some of the tubes they receive smaller pipes in, they work good for shipping tubes.

the other idea, I know would cost more to ship but I have seen poles ship in PVC pipe with the cap glued on.

PVC tube gets my vote. Always remember to get your S&H charges figured before selling an item that is over-sized.  ;)

These guys beat me too it, I vote for the PVC too. You don't need to glue the caps on, you can duct tape them, also make sure you get some soft foam for the ends of the tube.  Of all the rods I ever had shipped, the PVC impresses me the most.  I would ship the reel separate though, keep the size of the PVC down.

In the end, it's not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away.

talked to my friend yesterday evening after I posted this he said he stop putting the cap on as they cost the most. he just puts duck tape over the ends now and they get there just fine. he does now add those foam worm thing that are use in shipping, he found they keep the poles from moving around.

PVC or heavy cardboard tubes work fine.  However you want to secure the rod inside the tube properly.  Put some foam or a loose wad of newpaper in the bottom of the tube.  Insert the rod and about halfway down the rod wrap it with another wad of loose newspaper.  Once the rod is full inserted, wrap the top 6 to 8 inches in another wad of loose newspaper.  This will stop the rod from banging around inside the tube and protect the tip.  Secure the ends with some foam and then duct tape the ends closed and you are done.

If you are sending more then one rod do the same thing but put the rods in opposite each other.  Put the handle of one rod in with the tip of the other keeping the separated with newspaper.

You can pick-up tubes from a carpet store. They usually just give to you.

I've had rods sent from the States to Korea in cardboard tubes and they have all arrived undamaged. The PVC tubes are a little brittle, so it's possible that they could be damaged if dropped.

jimotis02, FYI, I have moved this thread out of the tips forum and put it into the "Rods" forum where you will get a better response from our rod experts  :-*

I ship almost all of my rods in PVC.  I cut out cardboard to fit over the ends then attach them with strapping tape.  Post Office doesn't care for duct tape as it gets sticky when it is hot...unlike today!  I try to find the lighter schedule PVC to save shipping costs as the heavier walled pipe is pretty heavy.  I don't care to use the cardboard, but it will work.  Had more broken cardboard tubes than PVC...but they can break almost anything!

If you are shipping multiple rods, check out the corregated sewer pipe at Home Depot.  It is light and stiff.  It is made in 3" and 4" diameters, so you can pack a lot of rods in one of those tubes.

Hope that helps......George

We once had some custom neon tubes shipped in by UPS. The sender packed them in PVC pipe with foam padding the full length, but they arrived broken. There was a wide tire mark across the center of the tube, which was flattened to an oval shape. Apparently someone drove over the tube along the way... ~xyz

If you use pvc, dont duct tape or glue it, run (3) 1/2''    1/4'' hex screws in it like a malco sheetmeltal screw can be had at any home depot!
