Can you guys give me some ideas for a good airbrush set-up? I'm looking to dabble in the "sport" of painting lures. What are the best options for a beginner? Gravity feed, single action, dual action, brands, tip sizes, compressors, paints, clear coats, etc.? I am not a bad artist, but I'm definitely new to the whole airbrush thing. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks guys. ~gf

Interesting thread I have also been think of doing some lures since they always pull the colors I like off the market. I be watching this thread for help on picking up a air brush unit too.  ~c~

Iwata Eclipse HP-CS is the best brush all around brush I've used.   I can shoot any paint but prefer Wildlife Colors taxidermy paint.   Any shop compressor will do but you will need a regulator and a mositure trap.

After painting you have to figure out the clear coat issue.

You can start out high dollar or cheap! I started out cheap, if you can get good with the cheap stuff you'll be killer with the high dollar stuff! Iwata is by far the best airbrushes. I started with a airbrushcity.com capital 2006gf gravity fed airbrush. They have it on sale right now for 59 bucks. It's a great all around airbrush. As for paints I use createx (airbrush paint). I get it from hobby lobby, its about 3 bucks a bottle. It comes in transparents, opaques, glitter, etc. I started out with walmart paints (2oz)bottles mixed with about 50% water. Little cheaper and they work ok too. I could go on and on for hours about the best stuff and how to set up a paint booth but I think I will just give you the holy grail of tackle making and painting website..... www.tackleunderground.com......... These guys are very knowledgable. Every thing you ever need to know about painting, pouring worms, tacklemaking, whatever.!!!!

Thanks for the help guys. Been lurking around tackle underground for a while. Can't wait to start painting and catch something on one of my creations! ~gf

One key item your gonna need is a lure turner! Go to the tackle underground forum, click on hard baits and do a search for lure turners. I posted a pic of mine on there and quite a few of the other guys did too. You'll need it to dry the clearcoat!!

hey cracker,

what would be the best way to rig a cheep lure turner?
i'm thinking a small electric nailfiler type thing that rotates at a slow speed to be my motor lol.. only because i already have plans to steal my friends to use...

also how long would the epoxy need to dry?

I'll put a pic of mine up later. I used an old microwave turntable motor. It's about 2rpm which you will need unless you want epoxy all over the room. It has to rotate slow to let the epoxy level out. I mounted it on a piece of plywood, connected a 4ft dowel to it and put harbor freight plastic tipped clamps about every 8in. I just drilled a hole big enough for the dowel on the other end and slipped it in. Screwed everything down and , wa'la! Hard do describe, I'll find my pic on TU and post it on here!

i think i got an old microwave i might can take apart lol
i dont care bout the epoxy everywhere i'll be workin in my dad's shed  >:D

i looked them up on TU but didnt quite understand them
its takin me a while but i think i figured out how to navagate it pretty well now

Here they are, This is my first lure turner. I've upgraded since this one. I put a pic of it later. This one will work fine and cost me almost nothing. Found a microwave in my neighbor's trash (dont tell anyone) had plywood sitting around, all I had to buy is the clamps and dowels 3bucks...

lol! You can find those motors on ebay for about 5-10 bucks. Dont try an appliance store, I had one burnt out and tryed them for a replacement, they wanted 48bucks!!! 2-5 rpm geared motor is what you need.

I use a rod turning motor that is 10 rpm's for drying wheel.   I attached a piece of 1/4 all thread and a 10 inch round piece of wood.   I use the plastic clips to hold the lures.
