After growing up in Texas almost all my life, being spoiled there by the lakes and the size of the Bass, then joining the military and being deployed countless times to those god awful places; finally getting here to Colorado and bass fishing and joining Pikes Peak Bassmasters.  I've realized and had to adapt alot to the fishing here like smaller lures and weights. I think I am getting the hang of it now after fishing a few tournaments, placing 3rd in one and getting smoked in another.  What are some other tips that I can use here, I am use to 50lb spiderwire and 6'6" bait casting and found myself ordering a 5'6" Falcon spin cast rod with 8lb test Silver Thread on it.

Mike...

Did you get your boat up here?

I recommend having a couple of spinning rods.  One rigged for drop shot, one for shakey head.  I bought some new ones this year at Dicks for less than $20 (on sale for half price).  Since I fish out of my little 14' boat I down sized from 7 foot to 6 foot and they seem to work just fine.

8 pound test is generally enough but I have one spooled up with 10 Berkley sensation is my favorite.  Down size your EWG hooks to a 3 and get some football head jigs in 8th oz, 1/4 oz, and 3/8th oz.  I just bought a new spinning reel as I wore my quantums out.  Some of the guys like to use braid and then a mono leader.

Baits....  You can throw just about anything on a spinning rig.  Senkos work especially well around here as do Yamamoto twin tail grubs.  I have had good success this year on Berkley Gulp Alive 4" minnows.  Caught that big smallie on them over at Navajo.  Small buzz baits, spinner baits, and pop R's can be thrown on that rig too.

Be sure to attend the next meeting as we will be going over some of this for the night tournament coming up on Pueblo next month.
