How do YOU go about learning a new fishing hole v~
This just a way that i have been doing it
i take a note book fishing with me
i take a cove ,or shoreline
DRAW A MAP OF IT
then  i explore it looking for drop off, creek, channels brush piles
(gotta love them crappie guys)
mark it on the gps, I  add this to my notes/ map of area
If it looks real good I'll drop down the fish TV and take a closer look
basiclee i learn as much as i can of the  cove or shoreline
try some where new next time on the lake after a few  trips
you'll be surprise at all the info in that note book

love to hear more  ~beer~

I fish approx. 10 lakes/rivers in my area. The GPS is my favorite tool. Been fishing these waters for many years. Some more than others. I do not run a high $$$ rig and have an Eagle 502C. Before that had a Garmin handheld strapped to the dashboard.

I just make a waypoint every place I catch a good fish or if something looks good (or I hit a stump with my OB  ~xyz). Next time out it acts as a reminder.

The good thing is that I'm not worried about trying out any new water as long as I have my trusty GPS.  ~fff
