Bought a Humminbird 585c the other night and finally installed the transducer on to my trolling motor via humminbirds trolling motor mount kit.

With everything plugged in and powered up, it shows up as no transducer connected. So after checking the manual it says that the transducer may need to be in the water for reliable detection. So I filled up a little storage container thing I had in my garage and was able to deploy the trolling motor into the tub filled with water. I would say the transducer was about 2-3 inches in the water. I powered it up but it still said no transducer is connected.

Should I be worried? Or should I wait untill I drop it into a lake to test before I bring it back to bass pro shops? Anyone had any similar issues? Any advice would be great, thanks!

Something doesn't sound right, you should only get that message if it doesn't "see" the x-ducer. Sounds like they have a cable not connected or worse, cut. Take it back.

Is the unit going into the simulation mode or just not recognizing the TD? First check the plugs for bent/broken pins, make sure the connections are tight. If the unit still does not recognize the TD and does not go into simulation mode head for the lake and try to take along an extra TD.

If the TD is bad or the connections are bad the unit should go into the simulation mode when powered up. If the TD and connections are good the unit should recognize the TD and function properly.

It goes right into simulation mode. Man, I really didn't want to take it off, went through alot of work mounting it on my trolling motor.

OK, If it goes straight into the simulation mode either the TD is bad, the TD cable is bad, or the connections are bad. Did you purchase it new? If so, go back to the dealer, if not you need to beg, borrow, or buy a TD that you can hook up to the unit.
You can buy a puck TD for a few bucks. I keep an extra in the boat as I've had them go out before.

Where are you located?

I agree with BassBuff.  Data is not being feed to the processor, Take it back.

And that would be why it goes into the simulation mode........ ~shade
