Do you ever look at your spinnerbait and wonder what color trailer to add?  Well there are many choices and many styles of trailers to choose from.   Today, I have a small tip on choosing spinnerbait trailers.

Personally, I like single and twin tail grub trailers.  They seem to work the best for me.  On the other hand, I do occasionally use split tail trailers.

So lets say you have a Gold tandem bladed spinnerbait like we have here:

Multi-Colored skirts have a plethora of color choices, as I will show you...

First, let examine the strands in the skirt, what is the most prevalent color in the skirt?  On this particular spinnerbait the primary color is a chartreuse/silver flake.   There are white strands, chart/black pepper strands also.

I have four trailers picked out for this spinnerbait:

Why so many trailers you ask?   Well some times a subtle change in color could result in a bite or no bite.  In the picture you see that I have 4 colors; Chartuse/silver, Chart/Pepper, Smoke/Silver flake and White.

First lets match the white trailer:

As you see the white grub bring out the white strands in the skirt.  I  use the white one myself.

Next we have the Chartruse/Silver grub:

TO me this grub should be the best choice.  You cant really tel, but this skirt has a lot of silver in the chartruse strands.  The grub on enhances the shine.

Last we have the chartruse/pepper grub:

This one really makes the chart/pepper strands stick out.  This one is my favorite on a local pay lake, the selection imitates the forage fish there.

I didn't have a picture of the smoke/silver flake grub on the spinnerbait.  The reason I wanted to use it is that it matched the head of the spinnerbait perfectly.  The following picture shows how all of them stack up on the skirts:

In closing, when your trying to decide on what trailer to use, don't look and say well I'll use green because that is the dominate color.  Look at the other subtle colors, you never know when a simple change will trigger a strike.

In the end, it's not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away.

Hey, thanks alot CouchTater... This post helps clarify a few things in my mind... I am just starting to try fishing with jigs, and I had a preconcieved notion that with a skirted jig, you didn't use a trailer. I saw a bass fishing show this weekend where a guy (can't remember who it was) was clearly using a skirted jig with a trailer, and he was demonstrating how to fish it a bit. Between that and this post, I've really had my eyes opened a bit and will be tryin a few new things to try and get those jigs working for me instead of against me!!!  Also, I never tried using these types of spinner baits, but the idea of putting a grub on as a trailer has my interests peaked a bit, and I am thinking about giving it a try!!! I love the wealth of info available here!!!

Great job CouchTater!
