I have an X-52 on the front of my boat and it hasn't showed a fish in the last two months :(

Besides the fact that I may not be over fish, that is not the main problem.  The main problem is the fact that it will work fine for a while and then all of a sudden it will read 120' or 320' when it just read 18' a second ago.  Now either I am hitting some heck of a drop off's or something is wrong.

I checked the wires and cleaned the transducer, but nothing seemed to help.  Shutting the power off and turning it back on sometimes fixes it, but usually it takes about 3 minutes for it to start reading the correct depth.

Anyone know what might cause this or how I might go about getting it fixed? I read in another post to try to unplug the transducer cable and plug it back in to see if that fixes it, but I haven't gotten a chance to put it in the water yet to try that. TIA.

That doesn't sound good.  Does it occur when you have the trolling motor on, or does it sometimes happen when you are just sitting in the water?  Sometimes high turbulence from a lot of vibration of the trolling motor can hurt the reading of the transducer.  Also, is the transducer level when the TM is in the water, that can hurt your display too, but that doesn't seem as likely if you have a correct reading, than an incorrect one, reset and get the correct one back.  Do you know someone with an X-52?  If you do, bring your unit and plug it into their cables.  If they are having the same problems, sounds like a bad unit.  My guess though, is you are having trouble with the transducer, and chances are you have a cut in your wire from the transducer to the unit, or the transducer is bad...

Creel, thanks for the quick reply.

It happens randomly regardless of what I am doing.  It's possesed.  I can be sitting still and it will just jump to 300'.

I also have an X-52 on the console.  Maybe I can swap them out next time on the water and see what happens?

Give that a try fishNnut, that'll let you know right off if it is a problem with the unit or the transducer.

My first guess is the transducer do you have a trolling motor transducer on it?

Mike, it is a trolling motor mount.  I'll try swapping them out today and try it out in the morning.  Thanks for the advice.  It never really dawned on me to just try swapping them. :-\

The other thing you might try is taking the unit out of auto (assuming here) and manually locking in depth range and/or sensitivity (no auto depth, no auto sensitivity). Make sure you have Fish I.D. off too. Need to eliminate the digital depth feature. Can go into overlay data and remove the digital depth reading that shows on your screen. "Auto-ranging" is a common problem and might be what is occuring in your case. Worth checking before replacing the unit. If you make these changes and it doesn't occur again, then it is a "settings" issue and not a transducer issue.
