Ok I've had this little Mitchell Spidermite spinning reel since it was a new item (about 10 years) and it still looks mint for the simple fact that I can't get it to perform with ANY kind of line.  Today was the final straw for me since it started throwing big loops with freakin POWER PRO BRAID!  Ok I understand throwing big loops off the front with monos because they have memory but BRAID?  I thought for sure I had this reel whooped and today I just had to toss it into the box and I'm never going to use it again.  I've tried it all and it all does the same thing.  I guess this reel just has a poor design so now I'm going to be looking for a new UL spinning reel for my rod...this is also the 4th rod this reel has been on...it's cursed!

What size line have you been trying to use on it?  :-\

thats a small reel, if it's the same one i'm thinking of, i almost bought the baitcaster version. try fireline
on it, (use backing)  mebbe you're over loading it? can't hold much over 75 yds of anything. last ditch, put it on
a crappy rod  ::)  fireline works good for me, i know, not too many fans of that stuff, but it works for me.
don't put it on a baitcaster though

I think that you should be all right if you simply make sure that the line is wound on TIGHTLY in the first place and give it a chance to break in.  To insure that it's tight, tie the end to something solid, back up until all the line is off the spool.  Then, crank the drag down tight and slowly rewind the line back on the spool, keeping heavy tension on the line.  This will insure the line is packed tightly on the spool.

Most ultralight reels have a small spool diameter which translates to small coils of line.  This means your line is more likely to coil and have problems.  Any problems with the line spooling will be exacerbated by the small spool diameter.

Also, make sure that you haven't overfilled the spool and manually flip the bail, then once you do that, give a short tug on the line.  Using the reel handle to turn the bail over is a sure way to cause loops on the spool.  Done manually and pulling on the line will insure no more loops on the spool.

I agree with giving up, I have two in the garage covered in dust, I use alot of spinning gear but have never got those  to work right with anything. No wonder they were on clearance.

Man I'm glad I'm not the only one!  I've tried EVERYTHING and this power pro braid was the last thing I was going to try.  I always use 4lb line on this reel and the braid is 8lb but the size of 1lb...I already know why it does this and I was actually more curious if others have had the same trouble with this reel.  What happens is the spool doesn't retract all the way when spolling the line back on so it has a conical shape on the spool causing it to throw out line that's deeper in the spool first.  It's sad too because this reel is VERY smooth...oh and I have the baitcaster version of this and I can sling a 1/8oz finess jig a mile with 10lb Yozuri hybrid...I use it on a 6ft rod for finess bassin.  Actually I have 6 of the mitchell spidercast reels and this is the only one that sucks...the Spidershaft rods are also amazing (if anybody has any I'd love to take them off your hands with or without eyes...)
