Are outboard costs generally outrageous everywhere or is it just California.  I can't seem to find a decent 20-25 hp motor for my 14' John Deere boat (well its JD colors anyway, so I call it my JD boat).  I'm restricted to small ponds because of it.  They cost over $2K here and the used ones are either are worn out, or too expensive for used.  I could rent and its not bad for a weekend just $35 but if I keep renting I could have paid for a motor, but can't afford motor outright. Doesn't seem to be very many low range motors available here.

Unfortunately outboards are crazy priced and that is everywhere. But I bet you could find a good deal on the internet, you would just have to work out shipping by freight and the whole site unseen issue so sort of proof would be necessary to so you didn't by a piece of junk.

We have several folks that are around a lot of motors, wonder if one of them knows where a good used one is?

Guys, I see some on and off through out the year, the 20-25 hp range will be high though. Always have been. New you would be lucky to see one for 2000 bucks. Rule of thumb on the tiller's has been really close at 100bucks/HP...On the new motors anyway. Actually is a little more often and on the smaller ones say like the 3-5 Hp range quite a bit more, but makes for a good guideline...

Still there are motors around and most of them in the used end are good motors or at least could be with little work. I have had them brought to me that had sit in the shead for like 5-10 years and all of a sudden someone thinks they will take it out. Goes out and she gets way hot, I have seen them actually have paint burned off them in places from this. All she needed was a new impeller, but now that she got this hot one should have her decarbopned good with plenty chemical, then check for good compression. I have yet to see any of the smaller 2 cylinder or less not clean up and run for another life time. Now if you was to get one that had the pack and stator knocked out on one that might get a little pricey to get her running and you should know this up front when buying. Let us know what brand you would like, if it matters and what would be the least and most hp you would like, and I bet someone around here can track one down LOL...

My father-in-law has an 80 something model 25hp Evinrude.  It doesn't run right now (I think it has low compression), but you could either work on it or use it for parts. :-\  Everything but the cylinders are in top working condition.  I used to run it on my old 14" jon bote and I clocked it at 41 mph gps!  Let me know if you're interested and I'll see if I can get a price.

ya let me know price and we'll talk.  I'll have to see about getting the cylinder bored for new Rings etc to help compression

I just talked to my father-in-law and he's going to get back to me with a price.  He's of the mind set that if he gets anything for it, that's better than nothing.  He said that he would call me back tonight, so as soon as I hear anything, I will let you know.

Just a suggestion; look at used boat packages.  sometime you can find a good motor with an old, unkempt, boat and trailer that someone wants to get rid of, especially this time of year.  I have seen many of these sitting in front yards.
Once you negotiate a deal you can always sell the trailer and dispose of the boat if it is too bad to refurbish.

Yes a good idea and I do just that, most of the ones I see here need some extensive work to be worth it.  Plus I know nuttin about OBs.

Cal, we have some very knowledgeable guys here on the forum that could easily walk you threw a rebuild of an older motor no problem. Rowdy is awesome when it comes to motors and I am sure he could make you a master in no time

Calincalif50,

I talked to my father-in-law last night and he said he would sell it to you for $175.  If you are interested, send me a personal message and we can work out the details!
