Let play a winter learning game, and maybe help a new person along the way! ;)

You are going to a lake you have never been too where do you start?

Here are three thing you might want to add to make your store better then just average, and I know there are member out there that do this every day so let us hear from you.

1) List thing that you would take with you and why you would take them

2) List the different questions you would ask if you had access to a local fisherman

3) List the things you would do to try and get familiar with the lake before you got there?

I'll post mine later my brain is on over load right now and I got to think on this one before typing it out.  :)

Spinnerbait, Jig's, Lipless cranks, grubs.  Spinnerbait because I can use it as a search bait and try to find out what the fish are after, same goes with the lipless cranks.  The jigs would be for the bigger fish...grubs because I love fishing grubs in cooler water.

Quote2) List the different questions you would ask if you had access to a local fisherman

Probably first would be the primary forage on the lake/river, what the normal water clarity is and if they knew if any tournaments were in the area recently, if so what the results from that TX would be.  Average size of fish caught daily on the water.

A map, and study the contours of the lake.  Find out what the main type of cover is for the fish, study an aerial map.  Check out Ultimatebass.com to see if they have any information on the lake.  ;) Just a few off the top of my head.

1) Fishing Pole! (Hah!!) Lures (Hah! Hah!) :)(Couldn't resist)

2) Where are the hotspots, what colors are hot, and what type of lure.

3) Research online(State's DNR website, Google earth, some topographical maps, info from the us army corps of engineers)

1) Search Baits, Soft Plastics and some Topwaters. Also a topo map of the lake.

2) How has the fishing been. You can usually get an honest answer to that. Any other questions and answers could mislead you  ~shade

3) Study maps and read area reports. Check the DNR State report and contact the local tackle shops for the lake.

1) List thing that you would take with you and why you would take them

A fishing partner is the most important item in my book
(encase something happens while out on the water)
Another item is a typo map of the lake I plan to fish
(help to find landing or water ways and coves)
Any lake report done on ultimate bass
       (good information)
Where local help is located encase its needed and a way to contact them
       (self explaining)

2) List the different questions you would ask if you had access to a local fisherman

what the hot bait in this area, color and/or style?
has any of the other locals said how they are doing?
what stag are  the fish right now?
how many tournaments does this lake get per week?
does this lake get a lot of locals fishing and what kind of fishing do they do?
is one end of the lake better then another?
is there a lot of boating going on during the day?

3) List the things you would do to try and get familiar with the lake before you got there?

study the typo map of the lake, also a road map of the area and if possible any aerial photo of the lake. Ask friends and other fishermen what they think of the lake and have they fished it lately
