Been catching a ton of peacocks out at the Lox Wildlife Refuge and in my local lake, Lake Osbourne. But, caught a few (2) of the more scarce type, the speckled (aka spotted) peacock today out at Lox. I know, the pic isn't that clear, but when you're having too much fun and teaching a few kids how to catch these fish, you take what you can get. None are "trophy" size, but they are fun to catch on light tackle.

We were all using Med-Light and Med spinning outfits with 8lb test. Using 1/8oz minnow jigs and beetles in Yellow/White and Orange/White colors. Just target the shell beds or pockets in the grass,  jig a few times and pull them up.

Those kids had a blast.

I think the speckled one will get bigger than the butterfly, but more sensitive to cold spells.  Both were released in the beginning, but only one thrived.  That's good news they are still around.  I have caught hundreds of butterfly Peas, but never a speckled.  Congrats! ~c~

I don't remember ever catching a speckled peacock. Those are rare. Thanks for sharing!

Did some digging on them. Apparently it is illegal to harvest or harm them as they didn't take to our waters as well as the Butterfly Pea, making them not as prevalent as their larger counterpart. They are more Brown/Gold in color than the Green/Gold Butterfly counterparts. Their spots are either all black or a mixed black and white. They still have the iconic tail spot though.

Top, tks for sharing this with us.  Thank you also for taking the time to be with the kids and teaching them how to enjoy the outdoors fishing.
