Let's Talk Frogs

There's been a lot of recent posts about frog fishing. Let's hear about your favorite frog? What type of frog do you prefer, traditional or popping?

For me, I fish a lot of shoreline edges and a popping frog works perfectly. It's easy to walk and I like to cast to to targets along the shoreline. My go to is the Spro popping frog.

For fishing around hydrilla, a traditional hollow bellied frog comes through the vegetation a little better and the Spro 65 is my frog of choice. It has a great longevity and has a very good hook up ratio.

I've tried lots of different makes (and continue to do so) and many catch fish but do not last very long. Finding the perfect frog that is soft enough for good hook ups but not too soft so that it doesn't rip is tricky.

I love me some frog fishing! I have fished several brands of frogs over the years, but the brand and style of frog I have tied on is the traditional Spro 65. I do not use popping frogs too much.

Just as you mentioned, Steve. I found that the Spro can handle a lot of abuse.

The other frog I fished a lot for years is/was the live target HB frog.

Case in point. The Spro pictured below has landed me over 40 bass over the last couple of weeks.

Yes, its color is basically gone, but it's still sticking bass.

nice! been throwing a green one with a little gold around here lately.  Big clue was he showed up on my door of the house a couple days. 

always liked the spro for sure.  Another one was the scooby doo color, which i think was pro choice baits or something similar -- they were good quality frogs too.

The Hook Up Tackle did a video with Teckle on all their different frogs and uses. Very interesting video to say the least!

I use the Booyah Pad Crasher / Popping Pad Crasher , Scum Frog Launch / Trophy and Spro 65 / Popping 60 series. A frog I want to try is the : Jackall Kaera Frog .

I use the Bobby Perfect frog.  it is the most difficult frog to walk tho.  at least for me.

I only own 3 frogs. All are 10,000 Fish Taki Frogs.

You need both a standard walking frog for fishing in vegetation and a popping frog for open water / edges of vegetation . Colors needed : White , Black , Bluegill , Chartreuse and Brown.

Anyone turned to downsized hollow body frogs for smaller lakes (i.e. Scum Frog XS , Booyah Pad Crasher Jr.) or other frogs in that downsized 2.25" to 2.5" size and 1/2+ oz range - or do you just stay with standard size hollow body frogs. ?

Great question Chris. I sometimes downsize when pond fishing and when there are noticeably a lot of small fish in the pond. I like the small Spro mostly.

I think there is merit to trying the Spro Bronze Eye Jr. the Spro Pop 50 (or possibly even the Pop 40), the Scum Frog XS and perhaps the Booyah Pad Crasher Jr. (with some BB's added to the inside for a little extra weight) . Bass Pro Kyle Welcher has mentioned throwing smaller frogs and cashing checks as a result . Some downsized frogs suffer from performance versus there larger sized original frog sibling designs, so your results will vary depending on the downsized frog chosen. I believe a 1/2 oz. weight frog is about as low in weight as I would go and would be inclined to add about 4 to 6 BB's for good measure . You would also want to use with a softer 7' MH/F rod for improved casting distance along with a thinner #40 lb. braid on a 7:1:1 or faster bait cast reel. *I believe for small ponds (usually having summer weeds) or other small bodies of water with vegetation - the downsized frog set up could be deadly in the summer and fall time frame !

Well, well, well...guess I was wrong. I found two micro frogs in my micro/UL tackle bag today. They're Lunkerhunt ones, about an inch amd a half long and around 3/8oz. I almost forgot about them.
