Hello, first time posting here. Been reading a lot about these Dobyns rods and would like to try them out. So ther more I have been reading the more unsure I get. So thought I would ask you guys to help me nail my choices down so here it goes.
Three rods I am looking for
Fury Series for the budget.
Bait Casting Texas Rig  ( mix of weeds, wood, open water) Could this do double duty for spinner baits also ?
Bait Casting Top Water (frogs, poppers, buzz baits) same conditions with weeds , and open water
Spinning Rod Wacky Rig, Ned Rig, Jig Worm

I hope your suggestions will help me decide on my choices.
Thanks

J.W.

If you're set on the Fury series, I'm really liking my Fury 734C for Texas rigs, spinnerbaits, buzz baits, chatterbaits, swim jigs. Pretty much anything around 3/8 oz or so, it really does well with.

njpaulc

FR702SF ned rigs, wacky rigs, and jig worm
Fr703c or 733c poppers, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits
FR735C trigs and frogs.  I thought it might be overkill for t-rigs, but I've found it works fine.

This does not need to be complicated, but I tend to rant. This isn't that hard.

But to your question-

The 734 Fury is fairly heavy, but you can use it for just about everything. However the "3" actions are a little more versatile, especially for the new guy. And they are better, in my opinion, for the topwater stuff. You need a little "give" (again, in my opinion) with topwaters. Period.

I have several spinning rods in the 702 and 703 sizes that do anything I ask of them in Fury, Sierra and Champions. The 702's are crazy cool with lighter stuff- I drag a lot of tubes and Ned rigs with them, as well as swimming 3-4" grubs. Fun rods.

Back to the rant- back in the "the day", which is older-guy speak, we caught millions of bass with one or two rods. Go figure. The modern rage of technique-specific rods wears me thin. Gary puts labels on his rods to point out their uses, and I truly don't even know what a "Sammy" is. Old guy, sigh.

Finally, for the most part. No, for EVERY part, a seven foot medium-heavy rod will get the job done. If I could only have one rod, that would be IT. You say you're not fishing heavy cover, so that would work for you too. A little bit lighter rod, with that little extra give to the tip and over all action will help in casting accuracy and in landing fish. That MH 7 footer will work for just about everything except crankbaits. And you didn't mention plugging.

In my opinion.

Oh yeah- welcome to the forum?

First off, welcome to the UB!!

Here would be my selection:

703 Spinning rod
734 b/c
735 b/c

These are the exact setups I give my clients to fish with. The only difference is that they are with the Sierra rods.

^This pretty much, although I do agree with Dale that a 3 power is better for trebles hook lures like poppers.

The 4 powers are considered a great all around rod. Since you say the cover is not too heavy IMO you could replace either the 734C  or 735C with a 733C for baitcasters. Personally I would eliminate the 735C for now.

Definitely go with the 703SF if you're only going to have one spinning rod.

I'd say that most Dobyns users consider a 4 power to be medium heavy. At least I do. A 704C is a 7' MH rod to me.

I use a Dobyns Champ 635CB baitcaster for topwater and love it.  I like a shorter rod for my poppers and it's great as a 5 power for getting fish out of the scrub brush and mesquites.  Great rod for that purpose for my techniques.

Sorry to throw a wrench in the gears but you can essentially four rods for the cost of three if you consider the Maverick series.  This series is totally underrated and offers huge performance at a hundred bucks..  A 703sf, 703C, 734C and 735C can cover just about everything.  I have three and they are an incredible value.

Welcome to UB! Those 3 should work well. The 4 power is so versatile it handles texas rigs primarily for me but also spinnerbaits and bigger topwaters.

I first want to welcome the new guy to the site.  I also could not agree more with what Dale said, especially at the end of his statement.  I have at least 12 rods and use a 7' M/H rod 90% of the time.  When in the boat I have 5 rigged but 90% of the time use one, and when bank fishing only take one.  Since I fish almost everyday this 7' M/H Combo has caught thousands of fish of all size, in open water and in thick weeds.  This might be old school, but it works out fine for me.  When something happens to my beloved rod, I will choose another from my stash for various makes.  It's just not that important in the whole scheme of things!
