Some of you asked me how and what I use when fishing in South Florida (99.9% of my fishing is walking along neighborhood canals) so I decided to make a PSA post about it, and few tips I've learned over the years :)

Wear socks, shoes, and long pants. Plant spikes are no fun in your Crocks and kneeling down to re-tie a hook is more comfortable when you're walking on grass and other plants. I have long cargo pants that allow me to carry my phone, wireless headphones, house keys or garage opener, pack of smokes, few lures I'm gonna be using, and a Yeti cup with vodka and OJ ;) I will occasionally wear a hat when sun is strong but prefer my regular glasses instead of shaded ones. I have a wrist band to wipe of sweat off my forehead or clean glasses etc. I wipe my fish smelling hands in my pants LOL. I know CapLou carries a small rag, I may give it a try.

As far as gear goes I only go with one rod. I like to walk A LOT and cover a lot of water and multiple rods would be a PITA. I rig my rod one way and commit to it. I very rarely switch from Texas rigged plastics to crank baits etc.

I have an across the chest backpack which I can access without having to take it off. Makes things faster and easier.

In the backpack I carry fishing pliers (attached to the strap on the outside), line cutter (also attached outside), scissors, small screwdriver set, lighter, small Shimano handle tool and flat screwdriver, small amount of fishing oil (learned the hard way when my brakes went bone dry and I had nothing to smooth them out), and a tiny flashlight (attached outside) to help me see line and hook in lowlight situations.

Next there's my double sided plastic box with compartments where I carry assortment of hooks, weights, beads, bobber stoppers, etc. I will occasionally grab second or third plastic box with frogs, jigs, crank baits, and more.

In a separate backpack pocket I carry several plastic bags of different soft lures I like to fish with. Few I always keep in one of my pants' pockets.

And that's how I roll! If I'm on a boat which hasn't happened in some time I'll grab all of the above plus more rods and another bag of baits.

EDIT TO ADD: I purchased Rapala fish gripper and digital scale today, so it will be part of my setup once it arrives: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F5EK466/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00

Hope that helps!

Good stuff, always cool to see what anglers choose to carry when bank fishing South FL. Btw, I moved your thread to the correct forum.  ~shade

Great minds think alike!

Btw what kayak is that? I'm looking for something light I could carry a street over to the canal.

It's an Eagle Talon 12.  It's not nearly as heavy as my tandem.  I've got a small cart I throw under it to move which makes it very easy.  I strap the cart on the back when I hit the water and it's out of my way.  Built in rod holders, etc.  Good info on it here: http://trailsandwaterways.blogspot.com/2016/08/eagle-talon-12-kayak-review.html

Thank you for the tip. I walk with a cane and I never thought of a front backpack.

I don't wear it at the front, just the strap with few tools but it can easily be turned around to reach in for lures or gear without having to take it off :)
