Prop bait tinkering

Came across this mirror lure prop bait for $4 while shopping. I have really gotten into fishing with prop baits over the last couple of years so this mirror lure caught my attention.
Mirror lures are better known for their salt and inshore fishing applications in my neck woods, but anglers also fish them for largemouth and peacock bass.
I'm not fan of bigger silver saltwater hooks for bass fishing so I swapped out the hooks and split rings.
Looking forward to fishing with this lure this up coming year.

Lou, I'm a fan of Mirrolure anyway, discovered them many years ago, primarily for use on trips to the coast here in SC when we vacationed here. I agree with you that a lot of folks consider them a saltwater type of lure, but IMO that's a mistake to make presumptions like that. 

I'm not sure that I have any Mirrolures with the props, but it will be interesting to see what kind of results you get.  I do like that chrome color and have a few of their lures in it! 

I posted several weeks ago about some big poppers, and switching out the hooks too, and can agree with you there. Those heavy hooks don't penetrate as well and are overly strong for most freshwater use. There's a big difference between needing them for Tuna, compared to a bass.    I've never seen that the hook color makes much difference, but also prefer black nickel hooks. Even then I'll use lures for bass,  that have the tinned hooks and are good hooks.

You've been doing this long enough to know what hooks work well for you, and if the hooks you're using are slightly lighter weight, doubtful it would ever hurt anything.

For some of those big saltwater poppers, I feel the lighter hooks also seemed to improve the action compared to the heavy hooks they came with and you may find the same thing.  I've seen that several times with lures I've used.

$4 is a great deal nowadays!

If the bass are not hitting it spend some time adjusting the prop before giving up on the bait for something else.

Bend them forward and the bait will not move as far or spit as much water and obviously bending them back does the opposite.

Another trick is to change the angle of the blades by holding an end in each hand and gently twisting them in opposite directions.

You can really dial them in to the mood of the fish this way.

I also pull the bait with the rod vs. reeling it and change the cadence. For me the reel is just there to pick up the slack and provide drag if I need it.
