Fishing and talking with Capt. Lou got me thinking. He has been catching peas on his custom jig in a red Myann cichlid color.

When we fished the canals on the Lake Ida system we encountered plenty of eel grass and hydrilla so I switched up to a bait fish colored weightless fluke.

Do you think a red colored fluke would be effective for peas to better imitate a baby myann cichlid or Oscar? How about other red Baits?

When I was a kid, we used to use a red Bagley crankbait in the glades with pretty good success on bass. My intention at the time was to imitate a baby Oscar. It was before peas and all the cichlids took over so I bet it would be even better now?

Since I'm tying those jigs, I think it will work with various lures in the orange/red colors. Orange & red are the predominant colors in those jigs.

I would bet a 3" Mister Twister Sassy Shad in their chartreuse with red flake, and some red or orange worm dye added would work.  Those jigheads I use have a barb on the collar for plastics, and I remove the barb for tying. I would bet that head in the same color and that Sassy Shad would work  ;D

I still use Sassy Shads for bass & Stripers, so am a bit partial to them anyway.  lo

I was also just looking at the Mister Twister site and they have a Sassy Shad version in their tri-color series that is watermelon red shad. I bet that would work too!  https://www.mistertwister.com/information/2-12-3-4-tri-com-sassy-shad/948#3TCSS10%2014RBK091P ;D

Good share BigJim, those look good, and at 3" they are a nice morsel length.  :)

Honestly, red shad and fire craw are some good colors in my area (Ida & Osbourne). Second good color is purple/pearl and black (tequila sunrise). I believe it does have something to do with all the mayan fry swimming about. We also have green talapia as well (like a mayan except green n black instead of orange and black) they look more similar to that bait you posted a link to.

As I said, I still like the Sassy Shads.  ~gf

Many swimbaits now are narrow in their profile, but that SS is not. We used them in MD for Stripers and most anything else in various sizes, and they were really good when Bunker where in the bay. That higher profile matches the Bunker, and I think that would be true with the cichlids.
