I heard a dog barking and growling. A minute later it was screaming...then nothing. I rushed to a window (it took awhile with my walker) and saw a Black Bear walking along my back fence that leads to the creek. He headed toward the creek. The neighbor's Australian Sheep dog was on the ground and not moving. I did no got outside but did call my neighbor. Bears had been seen in adjacent counties but not in my area. All the Save the Animal laws and PETA  should be pleased. I was startled and didn't think of my phone and photos.

The black bear has made surprising advancements in NY, from being rare in many areas to being found with regularity. They are able survivors.

Old Fishermen never die, their rods just go limp.

My neighbor said his dog appeared to have died from claw slashes and being stomped on. The bear didn't bite the dog. Am I missing something here?

It was being protective. Probably cubs around somewhere.

They are increasing at an alarming rate in Pennsylvania. Counties that never had any in are now good hunting areas. Even in the Pittsburgh area which has a very dense human population.

I am a mile from both the Mississippi and Meramec Rivers. Mattesse Creek is behind my property. The bear is most likely using the drainage. The southernmost  part of St. Louis county is very hilly with areas of old growth forest. My house is actually in the Ozarks.
