I have never had a moderate action rod. Always used medium fast action. I've been doing a lot of research and want to go to a moderate action. Should I go glass and what kind of rod would you recommend ? Highly appreciate any info. I've seen medium moderate and medium heavy with moderate action. Its getting me confused lol. Thanks.

Well,   Being on Table Rock I have more wiggle Warts and rods to throw them on than I really need but we hold the Wart in high esteem here in the Ozarks.
I like a 7ft medium or medium heavy moderate. The old Seeker 706 Glass is a great one if you can find it. The old Falcon shoal cranker was a great one but it's also out of production but they still have the 4-17 graphite .
The Loomis CBR 843 is good as well as the MHX CB 843 Glass/ Graphite blend.
Another company that you may not hear a lot about is ALX , They build a fine rod and they have a glass cranker in the Ikos series.
Do you have a budget in mind ?

The KLX is a great rod but I'm really surprised at how many price bumps it's had.
When they were $199 they were the best deal in the market, at $300.. I dunno.
Kistler runs them on special on the web site though.

Dobyns Champ DC 764CB.

Gary designed this rod with the Norman DLN in mind but recommends it as the perfect rod for throwing Warts, Rock Crawlers etc. also. If you look at the description on the Dobyns page you can see the first recommended bait is the Wiggle Wart!  :-*

I'll second this.

I'd recommend the 704CB if you need a shorter for more accurate, shorter casts.

I know this is not part of your original question, but I thought I'd offer some information that helped me years ago when I had this same confusion.

A rod has both an action and a power. Terms like medium and medium heavy etc. refer to the power of the rod. Moderate, fast, extra fast etc refer to the action of the rod.

In the most simple terms action equals how much of the rod (from the tip towards the butt) bends when under load. Power equals how quickly it will reach it's max bending point and how quickly it will return from that point.

The confusion comes into play when you hear people say things like "I bought a medium action rod" when medium is a rating of power not action. Some companies make it worse by labeling their rods with terms like medium action.

To make matters worse, there is no industry standard on what makes for a particular action or power. So one companies medium power, fast action rod might be the same as another companies medium heavy power extra-fast action rod.  ~b~

Hope I didn't just confuse you more.   ???

Let's really confuse him, Smallie. When using the term "action", it refers to the shape of the bend of the rod AND where the bend is on the rod. LOZ is also a great Ozark lake for a Wart. In the spring, the Wart is King of crankbaits. It's such as special period that we call it "Wart Time".
I use what many anglers call a crankbait rod. A 6'6"- 7'0" length with medium strength and a parabolic bend from tip to handle.  A parabola is a geometric shape where the bend is equal along the length of the rod. Most would call this a Medium action rod. The same rod parameters apply to both casting and spinning rods. Both types of rods are used in the Ozarks.

There are so many opinions about what makes a really good crankbait rod that what gets lost in the mire is, " what are you looking for in your crankbait rod? "

I've owned more crankbait rods in the past 40 years than I can recall.  For me, I always seem to look for the same attributes in no specific order.

Cast ability.  Will it provide the distance I want and I want distance.  I can always shorten my cast but I can't increase it with a short rod.

Action. An action that does not limit the bait's ability to generate the movement, deflection or built in action put in the design.  How does the bait act during the retrieve?  I seek a rod that has flex well into the length of the blank so the lure can pulse freely as water transitions off the BILL of the crankbait. I want the bait to deflect but not to the point the bait surges away too quickly from the object it just came into contact with.  I want the blank to lock up well before the reel seat but not so soon that it limits the flex needed to achieve the aforementioned.  I want a flex in the blank that obsords rapid surges that may pull smaller treble hooks from soft tissue. I still want power after lock up to move and control the fish, especially in river currents.

Sensitivity.  This to me is a perk BUT can be achieved by design and material. I have both all graphite, e-glass and composite crankbait rods

Balance, weight and ergonomics.  Even though cranking is pretty much a tip down technique, balance enhances sensitivity and a comfortable reel seat and grip helps to relax your grip, which is nice in a long day of cranking.

SOOOOO,  I sought out a rod with those features for baits such as or are related to the Wiggle Wart.  For my expectations I chose the Champion 764 CB. It provides the attributes I hope to get in mid depth crankbaits such as the Wiggle Warts.  If all I was going to use was that bait then I might change things up but I fish many other mid depth crankbaits besides a Wart. So much for brevity. ;PEP)
