I stumbled across this video of Bo showing off a Lee Smith Custom rod.  Lee you still making rods?

It was funny because I had a thought pop into my head (it happens once in a while) about why aren't guides spun, thinking of rifling in a gun, and would it have any effect?  Would it increase speed, help with accuracy, etc.  And then I found Bo's video and it makes sense how his is set up.  But does spinning the guides affect the rod action?

What I also liked about the video is Bo showed off how he holds a rod and I really think I like that hold and how he sets the hook.   If the weather clears here, I may go practice it to see how I like it.  As usual, you learn a lot from the people on this site.  But Bo, are there other advantages to holding the rod like that?  I am shorter, so I am not sure it would work as well, but it is worth the try.

Many of us have Lee Smith Custom Rods.  They are truly works of art but above all the quality of the product is without peer.  Here is a video of my first Lee Smith Custom Rod.  Many don't use them as they are like works of art but both of mine are on the front deck.

Bud is spot on. I have 2 Lee Smith Customs but neither one of them has the spiral wraps like Bo's rod does. That is going to be on my next rod if Lee is ever ready to begin building again.

Brian, Not 100% sure on this since I don't have a spiral wrapped rod but I believe it makes the rod perform better because it eliminates most or all of the torque on the blank that you get out of a normal casting rod when under load.

I have (2) (LSCRs)  Lee Smith Custom Rods.

My (MH) Action rod is Spiral Wrapped and the (H) Action one isn't .

Both are Great Rods and they do get used when I fish out of my Stratos.

I only use them to flip and pitch with also  ~shade

So why did you get one spiral wrapped and the other not?  Do you notice a difference between the two, other than the action?  Did you wish you had the other one spiral wrapped?

Lee Smith knows his stuff. That man can build a rod for whatever you intend to use it for, and he does it with an amazing vision.  ~c~

Lee for sure is a master of making great one of a kinds rods. I sure hope you can regain your strength and endurance Mr Lee so you can get back to what you love. Fishing and making great looking and great fishing rods. He made my a collapsible Frog rod since I down own a boat or a truck I can fit it on the back of my van and it;s easier to carry it along when I;m out there bank fishing.

After several conversations with Lee reference what the rod would be used for he suggested a Spiral Wrap.  It's hard for me to explain but there is a difference with pitching and flipping with a Spiral Rod.  Lee can explain it better than I can.   No I only wanted the (1) Spiral Wrapped due to using it for just flipping a pitching.

My second one I had thought about using it for a spinnerbait rod but changed my mind after trying it.  I use both of them for jigs and Texas Rigged Soft Plastics.

Both of my rods are great and there's No Comparing them with any other rods.  They are in a Class All By Themselves.

When getting a rod from a rod master all you have to do is explain how you want to use the rod and then just wind him up and let him go.  He knows more about this stuff than I would know in multiple lifetimes.  Both rods are fantastic and I had no ability to add value to the blank or hardware selections.

My Lee Smith rod is one of the last that was built. After listening to Lee's advice I got all the best I could buy and had it built spiral wrapped.
I am so happy I had it built that way.
Now I don't know if it casts farther than another built from the same materials but I have noticed that the rod has less twist when fighting a fish. This alone will make a rod last a lot longer.
It is the longest casting rod I own and also one of the most sensitive. My Dobyns Xtasy is more sensitive. It is also the lightest rod I've ever held in my hand.

I put my LSCR's to  WORK!!  The rods are beautiful no doubt! But they are my workhorses too.

Having built hundreds of spiral wrapped rods, I can tell you there are two distinct advantages.

1) They twist under load is reduced to zero.  Ever had a standard casting rod break mysteriously 4" from the tip?

2)  A spiral wrap removes line slap through the guides and will give you 5-15 % more casting distance.  The lighter the bait the more significant the increase.

Sir, thank you for explaining the difference.

Yes thank. That is what I was wondering, but then I wondered why we don't see it more often.  I believe that was the first time I had ever seen that, even when I was rod shopping a number of years ago.

Spiral wrapped rods are mainly built by custom rod makers. Big name brand rod company's do not sell spiral blank because its not cost effective for them. The demand is not high enough vs traditionally wrapped rods.
