I'm wanting to choose a suitable Dobyns casting rod for retrieving swing heads in the 3/8, 1/2 & 3/4 oz. weights to slow retrieve over hard & rocky type bottoms.  I have rods that can handle the low end side, but focusing on the 1/2 - 3/4 oz. weights before rigging baits (crawbaits & swimbaits mostly) I'm not quite sure.  It seems the XP full grip 735 might be suitable. Its rated for 12-25# &  1/4-1 1/2 oz. weight (that's a WIDE range...)  It has an Xfast action so I guess I'm concerned that dragging through the rocks, will the tip be sturdy enough with that Xfast action?  Some brands (& maybe Dobyns included just seem to have a softer tip, and that can be a great thing, but I'm just uncertain in  this particular  application. Maybe someone owning this rod might be able to give me some of their thoughts on my concerns.

My first choice would be the Dc744c then second is the Dc735c.
The Dc764c and the Dx744 and 745 are also great choices.
I drag bottom with both the 744 and 764.

Thanx Zippyduck!  having looked at all of them I can see the appeal of the 744 H vs 735MH, even though 735 1/4- 1 1/2 whereas 744 is 1/4 - 1 oz. - figuring the H action of the 744 may trump the weight ratings.  Do u think the xtra $90 is worth it for the 744 Extreme?  I see the extreme has a Fast action where the XP Full Grip has Xtra Fast action.  How noticeable would u think those 2 actions are from eachother?  r u using the 744 Extreme or the Dc744?  Thanx again for sharing your knowledge.

I believe the DC744 is the correct choice. It was built for jig fishing. The next best rod would be the Dc764.
Only way I would pick the 735 is if I was fishing heavy cover.

The difference between the Dc and Dx 744's is the action. The champion is a pure extra fast action. the Dx model is a fast action.

Now you noticed the difference in powers in the 744 vs the 735. That is because they are different categories. Yes it can be deceiving but the 735 is more powerful than most 4 power casting rods. Even slightly more than the DC744 which is like a 4.5 power.

Gary made categories and the 735 fits into the pitching category.
The 744 is in the casting category.

Check out the Dobyns rod Designations at the top of the Dobyns page.

Thanx for all of the help - its not crystal clear but I'm absorbing most of it.  Most importantly you've highlighted the best choices to be considered.  Last question then I'll make my pick - so u would still put the Dc764 infront of Dx745c (if I was willing to pay the extra $90)?  I know I can't go wrong amongst these choices, and I am listening!

Ok if you want to spend money then yes the Dx745c is an excellent choice and a little more sensitive.
I bypassed the extremes and went with Xtasy rods for bottom contact baits. But the Dc 744 is still at the top of my list.

I probably wouldn't go with the extra cost, just wanted ur take on it.  It'll be the Dc744 or the
Dc764.  I like the longer rod (7'6) but diff. isn't much so I'm leaning to the 744 - u know what ur doing!!!  Thanks again!!  Would've been a mistake with the Dc735.

Zippy handled this so well I can't add much of anything. I think the overall best choice would be DC 744C and you have choice of split or full handle. THX!!
