Ron Fogelson

At the start of 2018 the right side of my face went numb, like just left the dentist Novocaine numb.

Bite my tongue off right cheek bloody spitting blood and flesh numb.

This was caused by a new lesion in my brain but Doc said it would heal up on its own in a few months or so or I could be admitted into the hospital for steroid IV treatment for 5/7 days.  The issue with that is it becomes less effective over time and I'd like to save it for the unknowns to come.

From the very start of being diagnosed with MS I have taken it one day at a time. A few things helped one is its Gods Will and I'm doing my best, two,,, Danielle Marks Fogelson is my love and support day in and day out she is my rock along with all my family ❤️ three my military background and the never ending challenge to over come adversity.  When some one is fine one second and the next they wake up days/weeks/months later state side and have the instant requirement to adjust how to get around now that they are blind, in a wheelchair, missing an arm/s leg/s are paralyzed or a traumatic brain injury.  When you think about how they adapt and overcome adding a numb face to the mix of MS issues is not something to complain about.  🇺🇸

However I'm just a man and everyone has bad days so after a while chewing on the inside of my face got old. But true to my Docs word a few months down the road the numbness get less and feeling started to return,,,, but with nerve damage it didn't just return.  No it comes and goes and because you haven't felt anything for so long you also get over active feelings so in my case it acted like bugs were crawling over my cheek. So after swiping at phantom bugs a 100 times and to the point of being able to ignore that sensation you watch a BAB that big ass bug walk across your nose and on to the other cheek instantly returned you to swatting, rubbing, wiping your face tune and time again for no other reason then to reassure yourself there isn't anything there this time.

Fast forward a few more months and finally it seams as if things are getting back to normal,,,,,,ish my face still numbs up from time to time but more like you slept or your hand numb and making funny faces and moving my jaw around it kinda goes away,,,,,,for awhile.  Then there are the creepy crawly things from time to time then a few more months and I start to get a buzzing feeling from time to time like someone put a sander on my cheek.  That was the warning!

Do not ever ask or think God this sucks I can't believe it could be any worse then this!  No mater the challenges you have or are going though know it could be worse and know that no matter how bad it gets it will get better or with faith and family you will find a work around if you are willing!

So my current burden is called Trigeminal Neuralgia. Basically I'm fine, face feels great,,,,,,,,, then in an instant my eye tooth is having a root canal sans anesthesia, a bolt of 220 electricity zips from my tooth across my cheek bone and someone is shoving my eye through the back of my head and the most painful to date earache I've ever had until the next wave that is.  At its worse it was coming every 2 to 3 min and the pain hit strong enough to make me cry out or grab my face and close my eyes turning my head to one side or the other and the pain kept getting worse for 10 to 15 seconds then it was gone like never happened gone.  Got some new meds that are helping a lot but still self medicating some to get through the attacks.    So here is a link to read up on one of the things MS gifts us blessed enough to still be here.  And for those that tell me dally I sure look awful healthy to have a DV tag on my truck or make snide comments when the walk past me getting out of said truck while parking in a handicap spot I'm grateful my general appearance to you has no bearing on my medical treatment 🖕🏻

Hang in there, I've only met you a couple of times, but you always seemed like a great guy.  Great guys should be exempt from crap like this.  I'll keep you in my prayers.  Nathan

Sorry to hear Ron.

I'm fighting to get Disability again and I understand some of what you are saying. There are days that I look normal and anyone that sees me thinks there is nothing wrong. Then there are days when I moan and groan just trying to stand up or move.

My SIL caught me in one of those days not long ago and mentioned he had not see me this bad in some time. He commented that when I was doing a job with him last year I wasn't like this and I replied that "well I'm pretty good at faking it". He said again, no you were not this bad. I was but I didn't let him see it when he needed my help.

I wanted to win our FBRC Classic after what I had dealt with that year and I did. What most didn't know (I showed 2 of the guys after it was over) was my legs and ankles and feet were so swelled that I had trouble walking or standing. I faked it that I was OK so no one would know.

Hope you face gets better. My Brother got hit with a case of some sort of Paisley a few years back where out of the blue his face drooped and he couldn't talk right. The Dr said with time it would go away and it did. Took several months but you can't tell now it ever happened. Hope that is the case for you.

Ron, we've talked about how it's a crap shoot, some days are better than others, but damn. I can't imagine getting lightning bolts in my face. My back, through my hips, buttocks and into my legs happens hourly, but put that pain in my face and I have no idea how to handle that.

Hang in there, you know, we're only a couple minutes away if you ever need anything... I'll drop life and drive out there to get you!!!

Prayers brother

Prayers Ron!

My uncle has MS and was diagnosed over 6 years ago.  It amazes me at how this affects everyone a bit different.  My prayers are with you sir

Yeah it hits everyone a bit different because it's our own immune system causing the issues and we are all built a bit different and our immune systems are a bit different and we have it a bit worse or better then the next person it's a very individual disease in that aspect. However there are known treatments and known issues that make it better or worse so we have a way to mitigate attacks once they pop up,,,thankfully  lo

Hi Ron. Love hear some updates on your situation.

There are a lot of great info on https://painresource.com/ if you're in serious pain.

Ron, sorry to hear you're still having issues with the MS.  Many of us have some pain but I can't imagine what it would be like and the courage it takes to go through what you're going through.  I hope things improve for you soon.
Enjoying retirement in the great Pacific Northwest.  I've turned into a fair weather angler.  Why do it today when I can do it tomorrow?

Doc put me on a new Med Carbamazepine that,,,, so far has it under control.  Still get a flash roll over my face like its about to hit again but only once in a great while does it actually zap me.  Doc said Ill be in this for at least a year.  6 months he'll start reducing the dose step be step and if no pain then all good, but if I get zapped again then back to full dose and will try again in 6 more months.
