Mann’s minus 1

Ok so what's the deal with these? I bought 5 or 6 of them and I love how move and the depth is perfect for my bank fishing. But one thing I noticed is they are sticky! It seems in the heat whatever coat they use seems to semi melt and the lure becomes sticky. We aren't even in 95 degree weather yet.
Once they hit the water it's all good. I'm talking about taking them out of the tackle box to tie them on.
Can't just be a one or two or a bad batch. I've bought 2 batches from separate vendors at different times.

So just curious have y'all experienced this?

Also it's not a knock on the lure because like I said I like it and I'll keep buying them. The sticky paint isn't a deal breaker.

I think I've only used their "elite" version because that's the only one I've found with the bluegill pattern, buy haven't noticed any paint issues

I've had the same encounter you have, where certain baits feel almost like you stored them in a hot tackle box with some soft plastics, and there's some crossover residue. What's odd is when you throw them in the water, the 'stickiness' doesn't go away which leads me to believe it's not a heat / paint issue.

Yep, happened to me too.

In the record-cool summer of 1994 (the summer that started the LMB Virus) I used the Baby 1 Minus on a streak of good tournament finishes that culminated in me going to the Red Man Regional at Kentucky Lake. Where I also caught fish on the Baby 1 Minus.

Yup chalk one up for me as well. I love the Baby 1 Minus but I do have one of the larger bodied ones that has that exact same issue. I thought it was sticky from like a price tag or something but I tried like crazy to get it off without messing up the finish with no luck. Its the only one I ever had like that and I have had quite a few over the years.

They are excellent pond and bank beater cranks with this exception. Also I don't know why they haven't dropped the rear hook size or at least did something to keep the hooks from being able to tangle. I swapped mine out so they are tangle free.

If I got several lures and from 2 different suppliers all like that I would be calling Mann's and ask for replacements. They may not even know they have a issue if its happening after shipping. Here is there contact page. http://mannsbait.com/contact/

Some of them have a "crystal" finish and others have regular paint. I have noticed this issue on the crystal finish models but not the regular. Maybe it has something to do with whatever they use for the topcoat on those baits?

This last one I used, came straight out the box. It was actually put in a lure wrap for about 8 hours along with 2 other cranks and a spinnerbait.
No soft plastics, but that's exactly what it feels like. Every single one I have used, has been the same thing.

Thanks, quite honestly it's not a huge deal. There doesn't seem to be any left over residue on my fingers it just feels sticky lol. As long as the crank, cranks and the paint doesn't come off in 2 casts it's all good.

I am thinking it's top coat as well. It's interesting because I've never felt that on any other crank except the ones I painted my self a long time ago. My topcoat was nail polish lol. Maybe they use nail polish and nail hardener like I did.

Mann's lures haven't been the same since the hay day of Tom's world class Eufaula fishery and after his unfortunate passing. He is one of the greats that paved the path for us bass fishohics. Being a resident of his home town area, And with the humble assistance of a UB OG SGM Don Garner, I learned alot about Tom and the lake he meticulously mapped out and recorded all the records at but it is what is is, they are a low-mid level quality lure these days just like the once called "best bass fishery in the country" in which its hog population is a mere shell of its former past including the not understood dam area (I just mention all this to pass along some ambiguity in hopes that it will spread some research and enjoyably benefit)

The gator tails as one of my favorite, I don't think can ever be properly replicated. It is what is is, they are a low-mid level quality lure these days.

Its possible they are working to improve that. I read somewhere they were completely updating with a new website. Could be a good sign.

Also just snooping around I read in the FAQ section of their website.

Yeah I can see how that would be an opening for certain opportunities. I'd imagine you have to put some sort of quality control check on it.

When the minus -1 came out it seemed a world beater. Actually, the bait had been produced by Mann's decades before. It was in a series with names like Full back, Half Back and Quarter Back. I believe it was called the Half Back and cost $.50 at the time. I still have some around. The action is just like the -1.
