When you read certain members of the knowledge base here there are 2 common threads that they use, I'm talking about Wizard, Bo, WRB(Tom), and the curmudgeonly swamp rat Lee(Stay outa his holes).
They are, find the bait, find the depth, a third might be "use what you need to work the depth. These are simple rules and they work very well!!! I was reminded about them by wizard in a PM when I posted about the 2 simple rigs I had left behind and was now going to pick up again, jig worming and swimming grubs. There is no technique nor any bait that will work if you're not fishing where the fish are and there is no technique or bait that will catch a fish 60 feet down when you're fishing 3 feet down.
These rules are simple but they stand the test of time and they come from many many years on the water, may haps we should follow them.

Old Fishermen never die, their rods just go limp.

I am an old dog who wants to learn new tricks, I read most of the posts & try and learn how to incorporate the techniques that I read about visualization is important to me. The great in depth explanations of KISS is noted.

yes rodney, i hear every fall those that are bemoaning just how hard catching bass is here on table rock.  and why is it that all these sticks are not catching any bass?  because they spend too much time watching and reading about how in the fall that the bait gets shallow and that is where they should be fishing.  their problem is that if they would spend some time "metering", as wrb calls it, the water they just might figure out that most of the bait and fish are 35 to 50 feet deep or deeper.  that would mean that 5% or less of the bass population is up in that skinny water they are wanting to fish.  that is pretty slim odds of getting your lure in front of one.

have you ever noticed how a dog by itself, most often will eat their food at a nonchalant pace, but when there are two of them eating at the same time, they most usually wolf it down.  bass are not any different.  they are much harder to get to strike at something, when they are living alone.  but, when they are in a group, they are more aggressive toward an offering.

the lowly grub you mentioned is a great fishing TOOL, not a lure.  i catagorize  lures as something that catches mostly fisherman, and fishing tools, as those that catch bass when used properly.  example would be, we have three different bladed jigs.  the CrazyJig, the CrazyBlitz, and the EliteBlade.  all three of these are three different fishing tools.  they each have unique actions from one another and each has their own time and place to be used as a fishing tool.

there certainly several different ways that any of us can go about catching the same bass, but the constant is using your fishing tools correctly, which would be fishing where the bass are at the correct depth and speed.

you will have fun getting to know the lowly grub once again.  of course, the new generation thinks it has to be a swim bait to catch them.  got to be REALISTIC to catch a bass ~roflmao.  i would say that a simple grub mimics a shad or minnow very well, and its track record proves that.
